**Shells, but how I hate thread!** Qarinoa thought as she finished mending a small sear on the shoulder of a rider and sent him to his dragon. She sat down for a breath, and looked at the commotion around her as dragons brought injured riders and themselves to the infirmary part of the Weyr bowl. As she scanned the area around her, her eyes caught site of a shock of blond hair. **Who is that?** Qari vaguely remembered hearing about the candidate with blond hair. Had she heard he was a healer as well? Yes, that's right, and that he was older something like 20 turns. He was currently helping one of the dragon healers with a pretty nasty score on the dragon's back left leg, and having a difficult time of it.

She walked over to him and the healer, "Can I help Sarna?" the Dragon healer nodded to her knowing she had enough experience to not get in the way. She went next to the young man and observed what he was trying to do. "You should try holding the needle this way." she showed him the suggested way to puncture the hide.

"Thank you. I'm not quite as good at this as I am working with people." He smiled as he took her advice. "Like this?"

"Exactly, you learn quickly." she waited until he had finished then continued, "I'm Qarinoa, you can call me Qari. Are you new around here?"

"A little new. Since the second day of month ten. I've been trying to settle in here. I was a Healer before I decided to try my hand at dragon healing." He said easily as he finished up is stitching. They were tiny neat stitches. He smiled comfortingly at the blue. He carefully added a bit more numbweed. "There you go fella. That should help." He hated to see the poor creature in pain.

"Yeah, it's a bit different than healing people, what with not having a way to talk to the dragons and all. I take it you're standing at the next hatching? It's good to see some older candidates, there seems to be too many young and overly enthusiastic ones standing. Makes for less maturity in the weyrling classes." She jabbered on in her normal way, helping him clean up the supplies he had used to patch up the blue. Herimos smiled. "I am just thankful for the chance. I was requesting to come here before I was searched. Either way I made it here."

"Well its always good to have more healers here." She handed Sarna the bag of supplies. "Its good to have new people around...WOH" Qari ducked and lost her balance as an agitated dragon stuck out it's wing. Falling back into Herimos she thanked him and smiled.

"Careful there. Can't have a pretty thing like you hurting yourself. Then who would I have to help me stay out of trouble here during all this?" He smiled as he helped right her. "Well then I'll keep you out of trouble if you help keep me safe." She couldn't help blushing at their proximity, which she found odd, since she had been this close to many men before and hadn't been as conscious of herself as she was with him. "You're pretty strong for a healer." she said conversationally, trying to ease her awkwardness. "My mother believes in raising a strong boy. Have to be ready to catch someone if they are going to fall." He smiled. In his mind he was screaming. Why was he flirting. He shouldn't be. Yet, here he was flirting again. Qarinoa saw the slight uneasiness in his eyes, and wondered at its meaning.
She hadn't been too forward she hoped. "Well I'll have to thank her some day." She went quiet for a moment looking at the man standing before her. He was clearly having some sort of inner turmoil, and was trying to hideit. "Are you okay Herimos? It is Herimos right?" she put her hand on his shoulder, her flirtatious tone suddenly gone as her well-known, andgenuine concern showed. He turned a warm smile on her. "I'm sorry. I've had a pretty hard turn. I don't mean to wander off. I lost someone close to me and I'm afraid it still bothers me a bit at times. It's not your fault." She nodded and gave him a small smile to show that she wasn't bothered, "Do you want to help me with that mean looking score on that green?" she pointed to a little green that had gotten a small but deep score on her tail. The before he could answer she made an offer, "And, hey. I may not be old but I know of loss, or at least the feeling. If you ever just need to talk, I'm always open." There was something different about this young man, that she couldn't put her finger on, but she wanted to get to know him, and she hoped that he could see it in her eyes. "I'd like that. Perhaps when I finally come to grips with it I willtalk.
And I'd like it very much if it was you." He smiled as he moved over to the green and got set to work.

Qari watched him walk over and let out a breath, it was some how a comfort that he would think her someone he could talk to, when he was ready. She had barely known him for a few minutes and yet she felt a growing need to help him, as if he was an old friend whom she would gladly do anything for. She saw that Sarna was heading to the green after Herimos and followed suit.
Qari would be his friend, show him what she had learned about healing dragons, and maybe she could learn something from him.
