K'mai

K'mai

Escaping to a warm beach with Uetia and their daughter was always a
pleasure. K'mai sighed happily as he watched Sabia splashing in the
waves that lapped against the sand.

Uetia kept an half an eye on her daughter. She had spread a blanket
to the beach and was now just laying and relaxing in the sun.
"Faranth, it's been too long since we last did this," she sighed with
a lazy contentment.

"Definitely," K'mai agreed. He scooted down until his toes were off
the blanket and wiggled them in the sand. "Even when it's 'warmer' at
Dragonsfall, it's not nearly warm enough."

"Oh, yes," Uetia agreed.

Sabia got up from the sea. She came to deposit a hand full of round,
smooth stones and shells she had picked up from the sea bottom. She
piled them to the corner of the blanket and carefully arranged them.
"Pretties," she told them, giving them stern -don't you dare to throw
them away- look. She still didn't talk much for a child of her age.
She could talk, if she wanted to. It was family trait Uetia recognized
from her family. Some of her brothers were like that.

"Yes, they are pretty," Uetia smiled.

K'mai leaned over. "Which one is your favorite?"

With serious expression of her face, Sabie went thru the pile. She
picked up an oval-shaped, colourfully banded rock and handed it to
K'mai.

"is that an agate?" Uetia knew a bit about rocks but was not an expert
by any means.

K'mai held it up to better catch the light. "I think so." He didn't
know much either, just things he'd pick up from friends. "It's _very_
pretty," he said as he handed it back to Sabia.

"Agate," Sabia repeated, pronouncing the new word very carefully. She
copied K'mai's gesture of holding the rock up to catch light.

"Some people make jewelry out of them," Uetia told her. "Are you
getting hungry or thirsty, sweetheart?"

"Juice!" Sabia declared.

"Thirsty it is," Uetia chuckled and went to fetch the basket they had
left to shade.

K'mai examined the other rocks and shells, pointing out colors and
patterns to Sabia while telling her how good she was at finding pretty
things.

Sabia snuggled closer to him while they examined her findings.
Returning with the juice and wine skins, Uetia just had to stop to
watch them, with tender smile on her face.

"Here's the drinks," she said. She poured Sabia her juice.

K'mai took a drink and sighed happily. "Shards, I needed this."

"Me too, being wingthird is lot of work," Uetia agreed.

"Shards!" Sabia happily repeated the word she knew to be naughty,

"Look what you did K'mai," Uetia laughed.

"Ravyan says not say shards!" Sabia told them.

K'mai bit his lip. "Um. That's a special grown-up word."

"Shards, shards, shards," Sabia repeated the word with delight until
Uetia gave her a fruit. Then the little girl fell silent while she
concentrated to eating.

"Family trick," Uetia grinned. "Wanna silence one of us? Give us food."

K'mai laughed. "I'll remember that."
