Z'ku managed to charm a skin of fairly good wine out of the kitchen
staff before heading back to his weyr for the evening. It was Pierka's
turn to pick up the children and she'd already arrived by the time he
got home, so he opened the door to happy greetings from his boys.

Kazom reached his da first with a squeal of greeting. "Da da da," he yelled.

"Inside voice," Pierka reminded them but Kupier took no notice as his
fat little legs took him in a mad rush toward the bronzerider. He
echoed his brother and threw his arms around Z'ku's leg when he
finally got there.

Pierka grinned. "Well, it seems everyone is happy to see you."

Z'ku bent to hug Kazom and then picked up Kupier, adjusting his hold
on the wine skin. "I'm happy to see everyone too." He went over to
kiss Pierka.

She grinned at him and pulled the wine skin free from under his arm.
"This looks good," she said. "What's the occasion?"

"Well . . . I have some news to share. S'kand has asked me to be his
Wingsecond." Z'ku grinned.

Her eyes popped open wide and she gasped. "Z'ku, that's... that's amazing."

"It is." He smiled with pride. "Cyradis agreed to let me go early. Now
I'll have a real, permanent rank."

"Bazing!" Kazom exclaimed, mimicking his mother's words and jumping up
and down before running across the room to fling himself onto the
couch.

Pierka chuckled. "Go wash your hands," she said. "I picked up dinner."
She turned back to Z'ku. "So this will be great." She grinned at him.

"Yes." He set the wine skin on the table and started settling Kupier
into his seat. "Although it does mean I'll be busier." Which meant
less time for his family. He'd been aiming at rank and prestige from
the moment he Impressed and now that he'd finally achieved that first
solid step he had some mixed feelings.

"This is just what you wanted," she smiled up at him. "I'm so proud
for you Z'ku. When do you start?"

"Next sevenday."

"Oh that's fast," her eyes widened. "Are we going to be able to visit
my folks like we'd planned?"

Z'ku thought for a moment. He wanted to show that he was serious about
his new rank and put in extra work to establish himself but . . .
"I'll need to speak with S'kand about it, though I think it should be
fine. He's a family man himself, so I'm sure he'll understand."

"Oh good," she said and took the wine to their little family table.
“I know they really wanted to see the boys.” Then she thought for a
moment. “ Maybe we can stop and see my sister. “

"Sure, if you want. It is a family day, afterall." And it might be a
while before they had another chance. He started setting out plates
and glasses.

Pierka clapped and jumped up and down for a moment. "I can't wait to
see their little girl." she crowed.

Z'ku chuckled. "I'm looking forward to seeing her too." Weyr families
were different, and sprawling, and sometimes confusing. But he
understood that Kenlari was as much his niece as his brothers'
daughters.

She got the boys seated and working on their dinner before she turned
and put her arms around his waist in a warm hug. "I'm so proud of you
Z'ku." She really felt the luckiest person despite how her time here
had started. From being completely alone without even a past to hold
on to. To a large extended family and restored memory.

Z'ku placed his hands over hers. "Thank you. You and the boys mean the
world to me, but I've been dreaming of rank since I Impressed." He
turned to face her, one hand caressing her cheek. "I hope you know my
heart is always with you, even if my duties mean I can't be here all
the time."

"Of course," she smiled up at him then leaned her head against his
chest. "You are beginning to sound like N'vanik," she chuckled. But
there was nothing but acceptance and pride in that statement.

Z'ku snorted a laugh. "That's not a bad thing if it means I'll also be
Weyrleader someday." But first he had to prove himself as Wingsecond,
and then Wingleader in a few Turns.

"Yes you will," she agreed and let go of him. "Now eat before your
boys finish it all."
