Characters: Saibra, W'ser, R'enh
Description: W'ser updates R'enh and Saibra on K'reyel and Erdenth's condition.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 8, day 5 of Turn 11
Notes: Mentioned: Y'gel, K'reyel
Saibra wasn't sure where to be - in the dragon infirmary with Erdenth,
or in the healer infirmary with K'reyel. She settled on going back and
forth between the two until Mai showed up to be by the unconscious
Weyrleader's side.
Chioneth remained nearby her mate, keeping him grounded while his
rider was unconscious and while W'ser worked as fast as he could to
staunch the flow of ichor.
"Update?" she asked the Weyrdragonhealer as she walked back into the
dragon infirmary.
"Bleeding has slowed. Working on the talon gouges now." Apparently, a
younger pair had miscalculated out of /between/ and when they had
re-entered air space, it was directly in Erdenth's path. She wouldn't
have a clearer picture on the events until R'enh was on the ground.
The rush of returning dragons filled the Weyrbowl and R'enh came
trotting into the Dragon Infirmary. He spotted Saibra and rushed to
her side. Still covered with char he didn't embrace her but stood at
her side. "How is he?"
Tension and worry showed on her face. "K'reyel's with the healers,
they're keeping him under fellis right now. He's a broken leg and arm
that they're setting. Erdenth took the worst of it. His wing is
shredded, possibly irreparable, I don't know. W'ser is working on that
now. Tell me what you saw up there."
"It wasn't pretty," he said in a terse tone. "Two riders collided
going for the same knot of thread, tangled and fell right on top of
K'reyel." He was angry and the more he thought about what it cost the
Weyr the angrier he became. "_And_ neither of them got the clump of
thread."
Saibra's eyes winced closed as she imagined the scene R'enh described.
Poor K'reyel. His easy and kind smile loomed before her mental eye.
"Weyrsecond, Weyrwoman," W'ser greeted as he came out of the dragon
infirmary, still wiping his hands on a cloth. "Erdenth is resting as
best he can. I have repaired as much of the wing as possible for now.
There will need to be more work done once Erdenth has rested and
replenished his ichor. I'm going to send to Dolphin Cove and have
Y'gel come over and take a look as well."
"Yes, do whatever you need to save the wing." She couldn't imagine
Erdenth never flying again or what that might do to K'reyel.
}:I will stay with him.:{ Chioneth told Saibra.
"Come with me to the infirmary? We'll get an update on K'reyel,"
Saibra said to R'enh.
"Thank you W'ser," R'enh nodded to the healer. "Y'gel's a good man.
I'm sure he'll help as best he can." He turned to follow Saibra out of
the dragon infirmary and couldn't help but think how close that
accident had come to involving him as well. Just the thought of
Mnoranth's wing shredded like...
}:Stop thinking about that. It didn't happen:{ Mnorath scolded him.
R'enh half smiled. **Right, sorry about that.**
As they entered the infirmary, a healer came forward to meet them.
"Weyrleader K'reyel is resting under fellis. They've set the breaks.
The Weyrhealer is working on someone else but wanted me to tell you
that K'reyel will be immobile for quite some time."
**And so will Erdenth,** Saibra thought, chewing on her bottom lip. "I
guess this means you'll be filling the Weyrleader's shoes for a
while," she said, looking to R'enh.
"I will," he said with a bit of a frown, "this is not the way I wanted
to get the job though." He nodded to the healer. "I think the
Weyrwoman would like to see him if possible." He put his hand on the
small of her back. "He needs to hear that we'll take care of things
until he's back." **And my first order of business is to deal with
those two jokers who caused this.**
The healer inclined his head. "Of course, sir. As soon as he wakes up,
we'll alert you both."
Saibra smiled her thanks, although there were worrylines creased
across her face. "That'll give us both a chance to clean up," she said
to R'enh, as they were both still in full flight gear.
"Thank you," R'enh reached out to shake hands with the healer. "We
appreciate it." He held his hand out toward the door for Saibra to
precede him. "This is not good," he whispered in her ear.
"I know," she agreed. "It sounds like you might be Acting Weyrleader
for a while... Until Chioneth's next flight." She knew her weyrmate
was more than capable and qualified for the position, but it wasn't
something they would have ever wished on K'reyel.
He put his hand on her back. "Yes," he nodded as they went out the
door. "You need some rest," he said seriously. "How is Chioneth?"
At the word 'rest' it was as if some of the adrenaline began to fade,
bringing the aches and pains of K'reyel's catch to the forefront of
her body's notice. "You're right. I am exhausted." Her emotions also
felt as if they'd taken a whiplash as well. "Chioneth?"
}:I am fine.:{ Chioneth assured her rider. The senior queen of
Dragonsfall was still in her riding straps, the flamethrower still
hanging loose in the straps from where Saibra had yanked it aside for
her and Aglayath's catch.
"She's fine. I need to get her straps off her. In all of the commotion
I completely forgot."
"I'll do it," R'enh said. "You go and lay down. This is going to be
hard for everyone but especially for you." He put his arms around her.
"You have to conserve your strength and I'm sure Chioneth needs to be
seen by W'ser to be sure she sustained no injuries in the catch." He
kissed her temple and pulled back his hands bracketed her shoulders.
"Go back to our weyr and lay down. We'll call you if we need you."
Saibra took a moment of solace in her weyrmate's arms. "Thank you,
R'enh." She raised up on her tiptoes to press a kiss to his lips. "And
I am so glad you're okay. I don't know what I would do without you."
He smiled into her eyes, "and I'm glad it was a good catch. Erdenth is
a large bronze and it could have gone badly for all three of you. I'll
be there in a few with a full report. Go," he said.
Squeezing his hand, the Weyrwoman turned and made for their weyr,
knowing there would be plenty of work to do in the days ahead.
