Jeyme

Jeyme

What a day! _What_a_day_! Threadfall had been... well... _Threadfall_, and then when she'd returned to the Weyrhold it had been to find that not only was Dheymin sick, but Ayeme was throwing up as well. The foster mother had said it was something going around the children of the weyrhold's creche. Either way, it meant Jeyme would have to keep her distance from the children until whatever it was ran its course.

She hated being apart from the children for longer than necessary. With Ayeme's father dead and Dheymin's father the busy Weyrleader of the Weyrhold.... She felt pressed to be there for them as much as possible. Being holdbred, she wanted to ensure her children new their parents and had them as active participants in their lives.

And then the bathing pools... What a dungshow that had been with all of the dirty riders from threadfall crowding in to get a spot to clean themselves off. She had been sandwiched in between two men that smelled like the underside of a wher's bumpy butt. Although she had gotten used to using communal pools, the holdbred woman inside of her still cringed at it sometimes. Like today.

Her short hair was still wet and combed back out of her face and she closed her eyes for just the briefest of moments as she walked.

And then, as one does when they walked with her eyes closed, she collided with something. A hard something.

"Oh!" Her eyes flew open. "I am so sorry," she said to the man she was now staring at.

"My fault." He smiled, then looked down at the notebook in his hand. He was a bit taller than she was, and maybe a little older. His knots said that he was a Technician and the work belt he wore said that he was currently on the job. "Wait... you're Wingthird Jeyme, aren't you?"

She took a second look at him. Well, he was rather handsome, she admitted to herself. "Yes, I am. I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage."

"Hosten. Most people call me Hoss." He held out a hand. "I've seen you around. Wingthirds are hard to miss."

Jeyme wasn't sure she agreed with him on that. She often felt like Wingthirds were overlooked, but that she didn't mind in many ways. She enjoyed the parts of the job that others didn't, such as the hidework, visiting injured riders, and creating the sweepride schedule.

"It's nice to meet you," she said, taking his hand.

His hand was calloused where it gripped hers. "Likewise. I... ah, I don't suppose you could take me to your place?" He ran a hand through his hair and laughed nervously. "I have you down in my book for some work. Your weyr I mean-- not you."

The greenrider laughed good-naturedly. "Oh, I'm sure I could use some work, too. Couldn't we all?" She led the way to her weyr and once they arrived, she flipped the switch for the lights, only nothing happened. "I've gone back to using glows so it's not a huge inconvenience."

"It is because you shouldn't have to." Hoss gestured to the weyr. "May I?"

"Of course," Jeyme said, following the worker inside her weyr.

He went straight to her bedroom and flicked the lights there, which also didn't work. Frowning, he went over to a little cupboard and opened the door to reveal breaker switches. None were flipped. "That's odd... usually it's just a power surge and I just need to flip one of these to get the lights back. Might be a problem with the wiring. Do you have a stool I could borrow? I need to check the lights themselves."

"Yeah, just a sec." Jeyme disappeared and came back with a little wooden step stool. "Will this do?"

"Perfect, thanks." He set the stool beneath the light fixture, then stood on it to take the glass covering off and handed it to Jeyme. He then unscrewed each light bulb and examined them, then screwed them back in with a thoughtful look on his face. "They're not blown out... hmm. Might be a wiring issue or a broken switch, although it's more likely the wiring since two rooms are out. I'll need to come back with different tools. I hope that's all right, Wingthird?"

Jeyme waved off the title. "Please, just call me Jeyme. Do whatever you need to do, I'll leave the door open."

Hoss smiled. "Thanks. I'll be back tomorrow morning to see if I can fix the lights for you. It's been a pleasure, Jeyme."
