Gordenic made his way to Rhudas’ shop, leaning on his cane a bit more
than usual. He had been used to doing hidework as a senior steward,
and had even enjoyed it. However, it seemed he spent even more of his
waking candlemarks at his desk now that he was Steward, and his knee
was protesting. He had run out of salve the day before, which he never
let happen, but he had just been so busy. However, he had made time
for this trip, even if he needed to get back to his desk soon.
A young woman exited as he was arriving, a small bottle in her hand.
Gordenic gave a nod of thanks as she held the door open for him, then
stepped into the shop, glad to see there wasn’t a line. “Hi Rhudas,’
he said. “It’s been awhile.”
Rhudas smiled as he saw the familiar face, waving the man in.
"Gordenic! You're later than I expected you'd be. Has the knee been
feeling better lately?" He knelt to unlock the cupboard behind his
cupboard and rifled through it before pulling out a small jar with the
steward's name on it.
Gordenic shook his head. “It’s the same as always. I’ve just been so
busy getting on top of everything: double checking finances, taking
inventory, renewing contracts. I normally come here a sevenday or two
before the jar runs out, but it has been so easy to get sidetracked by
other tasks.” He gave a small smile. “I’m glad I can always count on
you to have the jar ready to go though. How are you doing?”
"Oh, all right." Rhudas said with a chuckle. "Much like you, getting
sidetracked by other things. My wife is nearly ready to faint, with
Lord Corofel home and our daughter a similar age. She's had him over
for dinner once. I expect the poor girl will have to strongly hint to
the lad that they should dance at Turn's End. My eldest is back as a
Journeyman, and Fiz should be walking the tables soon. I hear good
things from the Healer Hall."
“Ahh.” A frown crossed Gordenic’s face. “I’m glad my daughters are
older so I don’t need to deal with all the fuss. Although, I think
I’ll have a grand niece or two coming for Turn’s End to try their
luck. And don't worry,” he shared, “I’ve made sure Lord Corofel knows
he’ll need to make plenty of time to dance with the ladies. Best of
luck to Loriless. I’ll just be glad when we have a Lady Holder.” He
hoped for a fast engagement so everything could settle back down.
"I'd prefer this excitement over the recent unpleasantness, truth be
told." Rhudas said mildly. "Best of luck to your grand nieces. I
expect your household will be just as aflutter as mine. I've only got
myself to blame for this; I should have tried arranging a match
earlier."
“You still have time,” Gordenic said encouragingly. “What are you
hoping for in a match for her?”
"A Journeyman, at least." Rhudas said thoughtfully. "Another healer
would be preferable, but not necessary. Stationed here is also a
bonus, though I remember being young and enjoying the Journeying
circuits." He made a disgruntled look; he didn't much like the idea of
his daughter being pulled along to the arse-end of nowhere. "That is,
if she doesn't manage to charm young Lord Corofel."
Gordenic nodded in agreement. “I’ve enjoyed having all four of my
children nearby. We’re lucky to have three Halls right here, so it
shouldn’t be too hard to arrange. Has she expressed any preferences?”
"She had her eyes on a young journeyman weaver recently. They had some
sort of falling out. It's best I don't ask a lot of questions,
otherwise I'm meddling. You know how it is."
“That sounds wise. Young relationships can be complicated.” Gordenic
sighed. “I should get back to my office. I’m sure more hidework has
appeared on my desk since I left.”
"The hidework only grows, doesn't it?" Rhudas asked with a chuckle.
"Don't wait so long between visits next time."
