“Hand me up the knotted rope thingy. The thing that looks like a hammock,” N’kevyn was up a ladder, working on affixing various hooks to the ceiling in a far corner of the spacious weyr. “No, the darker colored one. I got the lighter colored one for you,” he corrected.
The shelving on this corner of the weyr was still nearly empty, but the bronzerider was on a mission to rectify that at this very moment.
"For me?" Aydhara said as she dropped the lighter-coloured tiny hammock and passed the darker one up to her father. "I don't think J'nic will allow a firelizard hammock in the corner of the candidate barracks. I don't even have a corner bed."
“Oh,” N’kevyn paused to look down at her, “maybe we can rig it to hang off your bed posts? I could probably figure something out. I’m disappointed in you. You should have stolen the best spot after the last hatching. It’s tradition I think.”
Aydhara made a face. "It's almost like there aren't that many girls Impressing at each hatching, _Dad_." She said, "Though maybe bedposts will work. He probably can't say much once I have a firelizard, anyway."
“If he does, I won’t hesitate to threaten him with your mother,” N’kevyn said cheerfully, “it wouldn’t be the first time I’d thrown a little fit in her name.”
She flashed her father a bright grin that hinted at doing so much herself. "You could try. I don't think that'll work as well as it did in High Reaches. But still, it's a moot point if there's a firelizard sleeping in it."
“Oh, I think it will work better now. She's a weyrwoman second and no one knows she doesn't cater to my whims here yet. But you're right. Better to ask forgiveness than permission sometimes.” Which was probably not the best parental advice.
Aydhara nodded. "Though Mom _does_. You've just been low-maintenance since we moved."
“What can I say? I am a simple man with simple wants.” He finished hanging up the little rope hammock and took a moment to inspect his work, “Listen, any firelizard is going to be thrilled to live here. Just as soon as I find one.”
"You know," Aydhara said, "it won't be able to get up there right away. The dragonets don't fly. You should get it a little wallow or something."
“I was thinking like a low sided but wide clay container with sand,” N’kevyn’s eyes lit up; he’d already put some thought into this. “I thought I could get one from one of the potters who makes my mugs. Maybe paint it myself.”
"Would they let you paint it yourself, or do you think you've got to get Mom to go flex her goldrider knots?" Aydhara teased, though her expression was thoughtful. "Can you get one for me, too? I can paint all kinds of pastels."
Looking down at her seriously, he said, “I think I can intimidate a potter all by myself, thank you.” Climbing down from the ladder carefully, he surveyed his work from the ground. “But yes, I'll make sure to get you one, too.”
Aydhara gave her father a look that plainly said that she didn't believe he could intimidate anyone, but let it slide. "Does Mom know you're renovating in here?"
“I don't need your mother's permission,” he said with a hint of defensiveness, “this is my weyr, too. Besides,” he muttered, “she's been crowding out my closet space.”
"Oh, no." Aydhara said. "Do you need anything to disappear? I could go shopping." She was already considering which outfits would look best and which Aydhan wouldn't notice missing for a while. "What else are you getting for the future firelizard?"
“I would never encourage you to go into your mother’s closet and take some of her things. That would make me a bad weyrmate,” N’kevyn said in a dutiful tone. “You definitely shouldn’t look at the excessive number of boots.”
In a brighter tone, he turned to a basket near the couch and pulled out a piece of wood that was… well, stick shaped. “I’ve been working on whittling a little perch.”
"I don't need boots anyway." Aydhara said, though she immediately thought of the ones with the high block heels that might not be noticed until winter. "Where do you plan on putting the perch?"
“That depends on how it comes out. At the rate it’s going, Avicath might have to just burn the evidence and I start over. Hopefully I can figure it out before I actually find the firelizard. When do you want to go hunting again? We could pick up your Dolphin Cove friend.”
Aydhara brightened. "Next restday? I'll ask the next time Cirina sends Digger. Maybe he can help us find some eggs."
“I’ll clear my schedule,” he said seriously. As if there was ever anything on his schedule on a rest day.
