Saedyna tried to take slow breaths. }:Be calm, mine,:{ Avarith said. }:Loseth and Kularth say we aren’t in trouble. And I would not let even the Weyrleader hurt you.:{

Fierce, protective love surrounded her and Saedyna eased. She was almost smiling as she stepped into the Weyrleader’s office. “Weyrleader, sir. Weyrlingmaster, sir. You wanted to see me?”

“Have a seat.” N’vanik gestured to the open chair next to R’lor. “You doing okay?”

“I’m fine, sir.” Nervousness crept back in.

“We wanted to let you know that C’pier is going to graduate. Even he doesn’t know that yet,” N’vanik said. “But I promise you won’t be in the same Wing as him.”

“Oh.” Was that it? She didn’t like thinking about C’pier but he was there constantly and now sometimes he was like . . . Furniture. Just something that existed.

“You’ve been handling all this extremely well and I’m proud of you,” R’lor said.

“Thank you, sir.” Her cheeks heated. She still wasn’t quite used to how different things were at the Weyr, that she could be treated with kindness and told she was valued.

}:You are the most valuable thing on all Pern.:{

Saedyna had to swallow hard to keep from crying in front of the Weyrleader.

“We’d also like to talk about C’pier’s payments to you,” N’vanik said. “He’ll have more duties as a full rider and I’ll need to put a few limitations on how much time he works for you. But otherwise, I want _you_ to decide how much he owes you. You’re the one he hurt.” As much as N’vanik felt angry and deeply betrayed at being lied to, at being made to believe his people had once again been attacked by anti-weyr fanatics, Saedyna was the one who’d been nearly beaten to death.

Saedyna sat up straighter. “Me?”

“You can take time to think about it,” R’lor said. “But once he’s released from weyrlinghood, you and the Weyrleader will be the ones deciding any further punishment.”

The rush made her a little dizzy. _Power_. Saedyna held C’pier’s fate in her hands. Well, to some degree at least. She hadn’t known how long the money would keep flowing from him, and now she got to make the decision herself. She could make him give her a _million_ marks! Keep paying for the rest of her life! She could have a new dress and jewels for every Hatching and Turnover. But she couldn’t act too excited about this. It was serious, so she controlled her expression and nodded. “Yes, I’d like to think about it.”

“You can let me know when you’ve decided,” the Weyrleader said. Then he smiled gently. “But since I’ve got you here, why don’t you tell me a little about Avarith and how training is going?”

With relief, she relaxed and her expression brightened. Every rider loved talking about their dragon. “She’s so wonderful and brave and sweet. Sometimes I still can’t believe she picked me.” As she chattered happily about Avarith and drills and class, in the back of her mind she was grinning and rubbing her hands together. She couldn’t _wait_ to talk to C’pier.
