Jeyme

Jeyme

When the chaos began, Jeyme's first instinct had been to check on her children. Once she was satisfied that they were both safe with their foster mother, she'd swung by her weyr, changed out of her celebration dress, and put on her breeches and tunic.

**J'nus.** Word was spreading quickly about the Weyrwoman, and Jeyme knew that her Wingleader was going to be the most affected.

The next person on her mind was Zaverin. She hadn't seen him since their first dance together. She worried what the death of Riyanth would do to him. Surely it would bring back many uncomfortable memories about losing his own Euvimeth.

There was only one place she could go for answers - the infirmary. She was sure J'nus would be there with Kapera, and in the midst of such an emergency, she had no doubt Zaverin was also helping out in his capacity as a healer.

As J'nus's Wingthird, she hoped she would be able to get close enough to get some answers. Security in the infirmary had been tightened, and as she had expected, only her position allowed her to get in.

"Have you seen Zaverin?" she asked the nearest healer.

The healer's eyes turned sympathetic, puzzling Jeyme. "You'll have to talk to D'kere," the healer said, motioning to the Weyrwoman's Wingsecond, who was standing in front of the entrance to one of the small examination rooms.

"D'kere?" Jeyme questioned, confusion growing.

The bronzerider's eyes met hers, his lips flattening.

"Jeyme, I can't let you see him."

"See who?" she questioned.

"Zaverin. You're here to see him, aren't you?"

She blinked. "I _did_ want to check on him after I heard about Riyanth. I thought he might take it hard after losing his own dragon and -"

"It was him," D'kere said, cutting her off.

"What do you mean?"

"Zaverin. It was him. He attacked Kapera. J'nus nearly killed him, but I brought him here. Death is too easy for him. When he's able to talk, he'll answer for what he did." D'kere's tone was harsh and unlike the normally laid-back bronzerider. "I'm sorry, Jeyme, I know you were... close to Zaverin." D'kere just didn't have it in him to feel any sort of sympathy for the worthless sack of whershit lying half-dead in the examination room.

**He attacked Kapera.** The words rang in her mind as she blinked stupidly at D'kere, trying to process it. _Zaverin_ had attacked Kapera? But why? And... how? There was no way the gentle man she'd come to know over the last couple of months could have done something so horrible. He was a _healer_, he wanted to help people.

"Can I... Can I see him?" she asked. She needed to see with her own eyes that what D'kere said was true.

"No," D'kere said firmly. "The healers are working on him. J'nus nearly killed him. He's not stable yet. You should go home, Jeyme. J'nus doesn't want to see anyone. He's with Kapera now."

The greenrider turned then and walked from the infirmary in a daze. She barely even noticed where she was going until she opened the door to her weyr and walked numbly over the threshold.

Her eyes immediately zeroed in on one of Zaverin's tunics, draped casually over the back of her couch as if he'd expected to come back for it when they returned from the celebration. Picking up the garment, she buried her face in it and inhaled the scent of the man she had thought she was coming to love... The man who had caused Riyanth's death?
