Description: Saedyna's Avarith rises to mate for the first time.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 4, day 15 of Turn 12
Saedyna had been agitated for days, swinging between irritation and a
confusing urge to touch people. Avarith had demanded a bath two days
in a row now and wouldn't stop flirting. Dread pooled in Saedyna's
stomach. She knew what was coming.
Avarith landed in the Bowl and bugled. }:Who is worthy of me?:{ She
posed for a moment with her neck arched, then launched herself into
the feeding pen.
Saedyna closed her eyes and told herself to be brave.
}:Worthy... I can show you!:{ Azureth waggled his back end and then
launched himself after her. He wanted to make it a game, to tell
everyone the rules. But this was Avarith's flight, not his. It would
be what she wanted it to be. It would follow her rules. And she wanted
her players to prove themselves worthy. Fast and clever and agile.
It was more from quiet mornings and evenings of observation that
Skadith knew the growing lustre of Avarith's hide had finally piqued,
rather than any attempt at flirting between them. But that never meant
he wasn't interested. That he was not admiring her in those short
candlemarks, as well.
On the contrary, her challenge to demonstrate his interest in her, his
worthiness out of his skill and strength, saw his great dark wings
shadowing hers to the feeding pens. Skadith rumbled a warning to
another blue, but that was it. He didn't need words, nor did he find
reason or place to use them as she blooded. He let lust pull R'fayne
away from whatever he was doing, wherever he was, and he'd let his
brutish size muscle anyone too close out of the way once the chase was
on.
}:Avarith rises and I will catch her!:{ Kularth announced.
R'lor closed his eyes and groaned. **I'm the _Weyrlingmaster_. You
_trained_ her.**
}:She is not a weyrling now. She is grown, and she flies to mate.:{
Dragon logic wasn't human logic, and it wasn't fair to deny Kularth
simply because _he_ was uncomfortable participating. R'lor hoped
Saedyna had taken his advice about trying to have a good experience
with sex. And he hoped Kularth would lose.
The blue snarled at his rider.
**Only take the blood. If you eat meat you'll be heavy, and you must
outfly them Avarith. You must outfly them all!** Saedyna's nails bit
into her palms.
Avarith hissed and tore into a herdbeast, drinking deep of the animal's blood.
A sharp cry rang across the 'bowl as another contender
arrived--Raveth. The blue executed a tight, showy spiral before
landing, muscles tensed, energy crackling beneath his sleek frame. His
wings flared wide for a heartbeat before snapping shut, as though he
could barely restrain himself from launching skyward already.
}:Little green, you will be mine!:{ Raveth’s mindvoice was rich with
laughter and promise.
J'vek, his rider, said a hasty goodbye to his friends in the dining
hall. Followed by their jeers and jokes he headed out to find the
green's rider.
}: Not so fast, Raveth, :{ another blue purred wickedly. He was a dark
blue, sleek like Raveth, and they were commonly known as rivals for
greens. }: You won't beat me to her, :{ promised Tarenoth, as his
rider, D'jai, strode up, whistling merrily.
Saedyna glanced around at the men surrounding her. The
_Weyrlingmaster_? Oh, no, not her teacher! And gross, R'fayne. There
were some she didn't know, and . . . oh, B'lyse. She eased just a
fraction. But her gaze kept searching, looking for one face in
particular, and it wasn't there. Saedyna didn't know why she was so
disappointed Tirraze wasn't there, only that her heart sank just
before Avarith leapt into the sky.
}:I will only choose the best!:{ the green said as she streaked away
from her suitors.
}:The best is _here_,{ Raveth promised, arrowing into the air after
her, swerving as he did so in an attempt to cut Tarenoth off and slow
his rival's ascent. The green would be _his_ this time!
It took J'vek a while, checking the flight rooms and then the feeding
pens, to find the correct group, but when he saw D'jai he knew he must
be in the right place. He strode over to get a good look at the
greenrider before the flightlust really took hold. Young, nearly half
his age, and nervous too if the way she kept scanning the crowd was
any indication. One of the recent graduates perhaps? It was hard to
keep track. "Don't worry love," he drawled. "We'll show you a good
time."
}:Oh, wait! Wait for me! I wanna come, too!:{ Riamorth bounded into
the sky and strove to catch up to the others. He was late, late, late!
But he could not leave Tirraze in their weyr, and she had to _get
dressed_ or whatever silly thing riders did to prepare for flights.
Tirraze was breathing heavily as she sprinted in. She was wearing a
skirt. A curious choice, perhaps-- except she could not find pants
that would fit over her harness, and she wanted to try to wear it to a
flight. She would never know whether it would work if she did not try.
Luckily, this skirt did have pockets.
She was late, but it was never _too_ late until Avarith was caught.
R'fayne snorted at J'vek's assurance, which was apparently meant as
some form of _re_assurance.
Oh, Saedyna must be _thrilled_.
As he watched the dragons rapidly ascend, his heart thrashing harder
and harder the higher they climbed, R'fayne might've turned to watch
her reaction to that, perhaps observe a tinge of her uncharacteristic
interest, even, but dragonlust often twisted his face feral with
sudden, aching, and vastly skewed perceptions of people, and R'fayne
was about as eager to look at Saedyna that way as she was him.
No, he'd keep this distance, this heat, and not crowd in any closer
than he had to for as long as possible.
Skadith, meanwhile, rocketed up after Avarith with gusto. He did
however have to dodge around the mid-air collision-waiting-to-happen
of the two older blues, and not trusting Raveth and Tarenoth to keep
it between themselves, made extra effort to stay close and relatively
in her shadow. }:Ignore them, Avarith.:{ Skadith chuckled. }:They want
you, but they really just want to beat each other.:{
}: Hush, youngster, :{ Tarenoth snapped. He would remember to
outmaneuver Skadith on the next flight too!
}:I chase!:{ announced Volaith as he saw the beautiful green issue a
challenge. He watched her with great interest and flung himself after
her rising into the air.
A'kades really wished Volaith didn't love chasing weyrling greens - if
he was going to chase, could it be someone closer to his own age? -
but the bronze hadn't caught a green in some time, so perhaps he was
determined to choose the youngest green who he could outwile. So it
was that he let himself fall heavily into the dragonlust, but not care
too much about the outcome, only rousing a little when he saw Tirraze
show up late to the flight room. It was awkward when he saw any of his
children at a flight room... they really shouldn't be allowed to
chase... then the thought escaped his mind as he merged again with
Volaith.
}:Many of these are young and foolish. I am not, and can show you
must,:{ Volaith boasted to Avarith, compressing a burst of desire and
promise to send the green as he followed behind her. There were many
younger dragons with the brashness of youth, and blues with speed and
agility behind them, but he was older and wiser to the tricks of
greens and had mated many.
Riamorth's laugh was like crackling lightning and rumbling thunder.
These other dragons were... absolutely silly.
Azureth huffed. Not a single one of these other challengers was
playing by the rules. Not one. They had not even listened to him when
he carefully announced them all-- and he had spent so much time
thinking of the best way to keep Avarith's rider safe and happy!
}:You're not chasing right!:{ he shouted at Riamorth as he darted past
him like a flash.
Kularth dodged past the rival blues and easily outpaced the larger,
bulkier bronze. }:Let me fly you, lovely Avarith,:{ he crooned. }:I
will give you pleasure, and mine will take care of yours.:{
Avarith preened to see so many males admiring her, fighting for her.
Even a bronze! She wheeled to fly over the ocean, glancing back to see
how the chasers were measuring up. How would she decide who was the
best? The strongest? The fastest?
Most of Saedyna's mind soared on dragon wings, strong and free. Little
flickers came to her, figures half-seen in a circle around her on the
ground. A face twisted with lust, an arm reaching for her that she
pulled away from, a tall shape looming over her . . . "No!" She
stumbled back and then . . .
Brown eyes, short black hair, a familiar face. Tirraze? Tirraze had
come after all?
Then she was joined with her green again as Avarith climbed higher and
higher. }:I am the most beautiful. The most desirable. Try harder!
Show me you want me.:{
}: I will show you, :{ Tarenoth purred suggestively to Avarith as he
tried to cut off Riamorth.
}:You are. The most. The very most.:{ Skadith agreed simply,
genuinely, having no actual memory of a creature more beautiful, more
radiant than Avarith. In this moment, she was all that existed, all
that mattered. As they climbed higher, he ended up jostled into the
middle of the pack, snarling between the press of competitors and the
wild slamming of limbs, desperately needing an opening. He gnashed his
teeth at Tarenoth, as if preparing to make it himself. He only needed
one.
On the ground, R'fayne felt the sunlight waiting for them up here, and
as cool ocean air filled his sails, warring and losing to the burn of
lust, it was time to take control. They twisted tightly around the
massive Volaith, ducking someone's tail, and with a surge of speed
Skadith rolled out of formation and streaked through the air, angling
to finally overtake Azureth.
}:No! That's not allowed!:{ Azureth chastised him as he struggled not
to let yet another of his fellow chasers gain the advantage over him.
Raveth had no need for poetic declarations or heated snarls--his proof
was in the way he flew. Speed, agility, precision. That was how he
would win her and beat Tarenoth! Weaving through the pack, he rode the
turbulent air like the chase veteran he was, twisting through narrow
gaps others would have hesitated to take, until there were clear skies
ahead of him and he could really put on speed. He flicked his tail
mockingly at the dragons behind him-- and shot after green Avarith.
If he was going to win, Riamorth had to do it soon. He was putting
everything he had into his frenzied blitzing and weaving, and he was
going to run out if it did not pay off.
There. He had to outdo that one. Raveth. If he could manage that, then
Avarith could claim him... if she wanted him. If she chose Raveth, or
if another of the chasers managed to outwit him as he tried to break
away, he was out of luck.
Volaith saw a smaller dragon twist around him and he hissed, snapping
his teeth. He wasn't ready to lose yet. Avarith was shining beautiful,
a green jewel he craved. The pack of chasers was breaking up, openings
created everywhere, and he was big and stuck between them. He needed
to _create_ an opening. The green was tiring and she'd look to gain
height once more before choosing, he thought.
So the bronze folded his wings and dropped _down_ to break out of the
pack, losing height fast in a dive. Then he twisted to the side and
began arrowing towards where the beautiful, shining grewwn jewel had
been aiming. Not where she was right now. Where he calculated she
might be. If he could intercept her from below...if she was looking
behind her, to her sides, perhaps above...then he could carry her
briefly upwards and twine before the passion dive.
Kularth's damaged wingjoint began to feel the strain, and he couldn't
be quite as agile as the younger blues, but he did his best to show
off for the shining green. }:You are the most beautiful. You are a
jewel in the sky. I want you very badly!:{
It was power to have males fighting over her, to have them trying to
impress her. Avarith's wings began to ache. If she didn't choose now,
one of them would claim her. But would that be bad? Surely he would be
the most worthy if he could outfly the others.
But within their linked minds, she felt her rider's pull. Saedyna did
not want the males to touch her, but there was one she did want.
Yearned for. Avarith loved her rider and would always protect her. The
green _had_ to fly, and a male must catch her, but if there was
someone who would make her rider happy, then she would choose that
person's dragon.
He was handsome, and kind, and each time she'd glanced back he was
showing off his speed and agility. It would not be disappointing at
all to be flown by him. Avarith tucked her wings and put herself
directly in front of the blue. }:Riamorth, claim me!:{
Yes! Riamorth would never deny Avarith. He pulled her to himself,
wrapped himself around her.
On the ground, Tirraze lifted Saedyna into her arms and carried her to
the flight room bed.
For the first time in her life, Saedyna went eagerly.
