Something was wrong here. It took K'aur a moment to notice. The snow outside was starting to get worse, and 'drills were finally called off once the gusts of wind got too harsh. He shrugged off his jacket as soon as he stepped inside his weyr and tugged at the sweat-damp collar of his shirt. A hot bath would be great, though the baths were probably full now that the cold and snow had driven everyone inside.
And that's when he saw it. Proof that someone had been here.
One of his chairs had been dragged nearer to the hearth, and on it was another riding jacket that definitely wasn't his. A pile of gear lay in disarray on the floor next to his storage chest. A pair of boots too big to be his were kicked near the curtain that led to the ledge, a small puddle of melted snow around them.
And then there was E'kirim, standing barefoot in his weyr, a kettle on the hearth and a steaming mug in his hands.
"What the shells are you doing?"
E'kirim grinned. "K'aur! Perfect timing. I made klah."
"And what are you _doing_ here?"
E'kirim pushed a mug into K'aur's hands. "I moved in."
K'aur stared at the mug, flabbergasted, and then back at his brother. His mouth opened and closed. He felt his face grow hot. "You have a weyr." He sputtered. "You were assigned one. You couldn't stop crowing about it."
"Oh yeah. Well, things change." E'kirim said dismissively. "I told the Headwoman I didn't need it. There's all those holdless out there in tents and things because there isn't enough room in the Lower Caverns, and hey, you and I used to share a room with our three sisters. What's a little while sharing a weyr? This is more space than we had in Amber Hills."
K'aur blinked. "You gave away your weyr?!"
"Yeah. They needed it more."
"You," K'aur made an incredulous noise in the back of his throat. "Couldn't let one day go by without polishing that moral compass, could you?"
"You have no idea." E'kirim said.
"And instead of _asking_, you just show up and move in? What happened to my say in it? You didn't ask if I wanted to share my space." A pause as K'aur considered, looking more and more confused and irritated. "And couldn't you just stay with J'ler? He actually likes you."
"Because," E'kirim said with exaggerated patience, "I didn't want to give J'ler any ideas."
"What?"
"You know. Moving in ideas. Permanent ideas. Sharing closet space and having the conversation of 'what are we'. He'd think moving in would mean something. I like him, but I'm not ready to _live_ with him."
K'aur rolled his eyes. "Oh, I see. Giving away your own space to some people in need? Sure. Moving in with your boyfriend who's been mooning over you for over a turn? That's a step too far."
"Shut up."
"You are the least self-aware person I've ever met."
"Yeah, well. I'm your problem, whether you like it or not. You're lucky I'm charming."
"You're lucky I don't chuck you off the ledge."
E'kirim looked K'aur up and down, a teasing smile on his lips. "I'd like to see you try."
K'aur narrowed his eyes. "You better not have touched my gear."
"I reorganized it a little. To make room."
"You what?!" K’aur let out a strangled sound and pointed at him. “You have until the end of the sevenday to find somewhere else to be. Because if I come back from drills and find one of your dumb socks on my door, I swear to Faranth"”
"Oh, about that." E'kirim said. "The Headwoman said that there isn't any suitable spare weyrs, what with trying to get holdless folks out of the storm. And there'll be more storms, so it's not like anyone can kick them out. She didn't know when there'd be a spare weyr again. You're stuck with me until further notice."
"You're _what_,"
"Oh, and uh, I guess all the extra cots and things are being used by holdless, too. Oselle said she'd send a bed up, but she hasn't, so…"
"What?!"
