"Thank you for taking the time to meet with me, Headwoman," R'lor said
as he took a seat in Alyena's office.
"Of course. I'm always happy to help the weyrlingstaff." Alyena brought
over a jug of hot klah and poured it into two cups before sitting down
opposite him. "How are you? It can't be long now until your class
completes their training."
"I'm doing well, though I'm looking forward to having a bit of free
time once the weyrlings graduate." The days had become something of a
blur.
"You certainly deserve it." From what she'd heard, this group of
weyrlings had been more challenging than most. "It's a credit to you
that they've all achieved so much, with the difficulties some of them
faced."
The praise made his cheeks warm a litte. "Every clutch is a challenge
in its own way, but thank you."
"It's only the truth." Alyena blew lightly on her klah to cool it. "So,
how can I help? Are all the weyrlings settled in to their new weyrs?"
"Yes, they seem to be pleased with their new homes, though some are
already wishing for larger weyrs." R'lor chuckled. "I came to ask you
for a rather unusual request. I need an . . . accomodation for our
female bluerider, Tirraze. Before long, Riamorth will start chasing
and we don't know for sure how a woman bonded to a male dragon will
react in the flight room. I'd like the Weyr to pay for a dildo and
harness."
The Headwoman's brow rose slightly in polite confusion. "A what?"
R'lor had wondered if he'd need to explain that to a holdbred person.
Hopefully it wouldn't shock her too much. "An object that resembles
the male reproductive organ. You may not be familiar with them but
they're fairly common in weyrs."
"Oh..." She still looked bemused, and faintly embarrassed. "You want to
explain to her how it - ah, works? But perhaps the healers would have a
suitable item for demonstrations. You could ask in the Infirmary."
"I can find Tirraze assistance if she needs it," R'lor said easily. "I
would never ask for something like this normally, but female
blueriders are such a new phenomenon. We don't know if she'll have
issues in the flightroom if Riamoth catches and she doesn't, ah, have
the right equipment."
Alyena's expression cleared as understanding dawned. "Oh, I see now! You
want her to wear it. So that - well, never mind." She smiled and shook
her head. "Every time I think I've heard it all, you dragonriders still
surprise me. Of course, if it's something she needs, then the Weyr can
provide it. Although I don't know where in the world we'd buy such a thing."
"Some of the glassmiths at the Weyr have a skill for it. Making one
for Tirraze should be no trouble for them." R'lor frowned slightly.
"Though I will have to make sure she has _reasonable_ specifications
for them."
Alyena covered her mouth to stifle a rather undignified giggle. It was
no use - she couldn't help picturing the result of an unreasonable
specification. "I'll leave that aspect in your capable hands,
Weyrlingmaster. As for the cost, we'll just put it down in the accounts
with the other flight room supplies."
R'lor chuckled. "Tirraze has gotten cheeky, so I wouldn't put it past
her to get a bit creative." He'd have to remind her to be considerate
of her future flight partners. "If the Weyrwoman has any questions
about the expense, you can ask her to speak with me."
"I certainly will." Alyena hadn't thought of what would happen when she
went through the accounts with the Weyrwoman. She put that problem aside
for another time, and focused on practicalities. "Do you suppose we
should have a spare made? What if she drops it and it smashes to
smithereens? Young people aren't always careful."
The Weyrlingmaster laughed softly. "They are somewhat durable. But if
she breaks it, she can pay for another herself. That might make her a
little more careful the next time."
"Well, we could be a little more lenient if it's after winning a flight.
I expect taking care not to drop her... dildo? ...might not be the first
thing on her mind." She'd heard the aftermath of a flight could get a
little wild. "What about the harness? Can she make her own, like riding
straps, or is it more specialized?"
"I uh, I hope she doesn't have to replace it as often as riding
straps." He laughed again. "I think it would be best to have it made
by crafters, but I'll have them instruct her for any repairs or
replacements."
"That's good. I should hope there's a little less wear and tear than
from fighting Thread," Alyena said. "Anyway, there's no reason to be
concerned about the cost. Compared to feeding and clothing several
hundred riders, their families and staff - not to mention the dragons -
this will barely register."
"Thank you for being so understanding, Headwoman," R'lor said. "You're
adapting to weyrlife very well."
"You can only spend so much time in a state of shock," Alyena said.
"Glass - ah, implements for a female bluerider? Just an ordinary morning
at the Weyr. The only trick is to tell what's real, and what's made up
by weyrfolk for the fun of seeing if I'll believe it." She gave him a
mock-severe look. "This had better be real, by the way, or _you're_
paying for it."
R'lor laughed. "It's real. It came up . . ." He made a sound
suspiciously like a snort. "during our discussion on mating flights."
"Oh, yes? I've heard about that class. Apparently it's quite famous
among candidates and weyrlings alike." Alyena sipped her klah. "Neither
of my children will tell me anything about it."
"Not surprising," R'lor said with another chuckle. "I'd invite you to
sit in for educational purposes, but I expect that wouldn't go over
well with the kids."
"No, I can't imagine so. But I've picked up bits, here and there. The
old aunties could teach a whole course on the subject." They could
discuss the merits of the various male riders for hours, not that she
was going to mention that to the Weyrlingmaster.
"I could give you some of my class materials. A little light reading
for the evenings," he said with a gleam in his eyes.
"Class materials?" She laughed. "Don't tell me you give them homework."
He couldn't help thinking of the class he'd recently given. "There are
a few assignments they need to complete outside of class. Going into a
mating flight without experience is . . . well, it can be dangerous."
Her thoughts immediately went to her son. He still seemed so young -
just a boy. "Is R'ayl..." She hadn't heard anything about Delorth
chasing greens.
R'lor frowned thoughtfully, wondering how much to tell the boy's
mother. "He's a bit young for that but . . . he'll need to think about
it soon. I know it's difficult for those who aren't weyrbred to
understand, but it's about the needs of the dragon and concern for
your fellow riders." R'lor was uncomfortable at the thought of
bringing it up with R'ayl. He did seem so young, and R'lor felt . . .
a bit parental toward him.
"I understand. It's not something I'm entirely easy thinking about, but
above all, I want him to be safe. If he was a girl, and we were still in
the Hold, I'd be thinking about talking to him before he was much
older...but he isn't, and we're not." She smiled, a little sadly now. "I
think of him as my little boy, but he's going to be a young man soon,
isn't he?"
The Weyrlingmaster nodded. "They grow up so fast."
"They do. My daughter too." It had changed how she felt about Evalya
being a Candidate, but it was too late now even if she could have
prevented it. Hopefully if she did Impress, it wouldn't be until she was
older. Alyena had heard that it wasn't usual to Impress as young as her
son. "Well, there's nothing we can do to stop that. But if there's
anything we can do to make their lives easier then just let me know.
Extra...appendages included."
R'lor's humor returned and he chuckled. "Thank you again, Headwoman."
