Description: The conclusion of the DFW Survivor game and the winners!
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 5, day 22 of Turn 12
A’ris was halfway up the three-tiered course. The bottom level had
been fairly easy and straightforward, but the higher he got, the more
he felt his knees tremble. The annoying part was that he could _not_
get his mind to control his quivering knees. He logically knew he was
‘safe,’ relatively, but his thighs didn’t seem to get the message.
**_Stop. Shaking._** He scolded, glaring down at his legs as if they
had minds of their own.
Reading the threadfall maps had been nearly impossible for the
illiterate brownrider, and now he felt like he had let the team down.
He had to make up for it now by at _least_ being able to perform the
physical challenge. His muscles were all he was good for.
“We’ve got this ‘Favorites!” he called encouragingly to the rest of
the team as his foot made it to another rope loop.
Halia wasn’t the best student when it came to windspeeds and
memorization, but she was athletic enough and had grown up climbing
the cliffs of the weyr. This was just… ropier. She rolled her eyes at
A’ris’s encouraging cheer as she climbed past him. He was almost as
bad as C’uren today and-- “...Are your legs shaking?”
“Shaking with excitement,” he gritted out as he used his upper body
strength to pull himself onto another platform.
He surprised a laugh out of Halia. Well shards, that was kinda
charming. She couldn’t tease that. “Alright, holder boy. Put those
muscles to good use. I’ll see you at the end.”
E'kirim covered his own laugh with an unconvincing snort. "Smooth." He
said as he reached a hand out to help pull A'ris further up. He wasn't
acrobatic enough to slip through the course and his muscles burned
with the effort, but he wasn't quite at A'ris' level yet. "Zaphare,
you good?" He called down.
“Thanks, man,” A’ris said to E’kirim.
“No, I am not,” Zaphare called back. But she was making progress,
emboldened by the fact that she had already fallen and it had actually
been a little bit fun rather than… well, _splatty_. If she fell again,
it would be okay, and that thought helped her along. “I don’t guess
there’s any chance that one of you big, strong, manly men will come
down here and let me ride you like a backpack? I’d make it worth your
while…”
Despite his trembling knees, A’ris’s head swiveled back for a moment
to regard Zaphare. “Seriously?” Because he _would_ consider it….
She hadn’t expected anyone to take her up on the offer, but if he was
thinking about it…well, why not? He was a nice-looking guy. “Yeah,”
she decided. “I am one-hundred percent serious. You’ll see stars.
Guaranteed.”
"Don't fall for it." E'kirim said. "Neither of you will make it back
up here. C'mon Zaphare, of you can't climb up here there's no way you
can climb A'ris."
A’ris had the good grace to blush. “I don’t think my legs can make it
back down anyway,” he called to Zaphare. The brown Weyrling was two
wobbling rope loops away from being at the end of the course now.
“You could always just fall after you reach the top,” S’yen reminded
him sourly from somewhere below. “This is so stupid,” he muttered to
himself.
“Crossing you both off my list!” Zaphare called up to A'ris and
E'kirim. “Just so you know!”
She got back to climbing on her own, muttering curses to herself.
--
K’yne couldn’t believe it. Out of all the Weyrlings, how had “Daddies’
Favorites” been the team to win? Perhaps his disbelief was purely due
to the name. They’d done well in the firestone toss, after all, and
had somehow pulled themselves together on the Ropes Course, despite
all of the trembling knees and banter between them.
“Thank you all for participating,” he told the gathered Weyrling
group. They looked exhausted… and like they might possibly glue him to
his chair, as he’d heard had happened to the Barrier Lake
Weyrlingmaster.
“Since _Team Three_ are your winners, they will all be exempt from
latrine duty for the next month. You’re all free to rest up and have
some free time for the rest of the evening.”
