The runners were ready, standing calmly in the late afternoon light.
There was still a handful of candlemarks left of daylight, plenty of time to have a pleasant enough ride through the Hold's immediate lands.
Benamil only wished he were as calm as the beasts were.
Royan and Pyunn approached, arms linked, with smiles for Benamil.
Peryan follow a little distance behind, scowling at their backs.
"Lovely evening isn't Benamil?" Pyunn asked her brother in law.
"Oh, er...yes, Pyunn. Should be a splendid sunset later as well."
Benamil offered the reins to his brother. "Evening, Royan...Peryan."
Oh...he wished he could just crawl under a rock and stay there for the rest of his miserable days....
Royan helped his wife into the saddle and swung into his own. He looked pointedly at Peryan.
The girl smiled sweetly. She was completely clueless about runners and dreading the ride.
Benamil sighed and brought the girl's runner over- a gentle mare who was as likely to throw a rider as she was to grow wings and fly with the dragons. "Here....you just put your foot into the stirrup and swing your other leg over so you're sitting astride the runner's back. You can pull on her mane a bit if you need to- but just a bit, mind."
Peryan was horrified. Ride like a man?! She couldn't. Behind her Pyunn and Royan laughed into their hands. Royan debated correcting the girls assumptions and held his peace.
"Oh..here...should I have put a side saddle on her?" Benamil asked his brother, completely at a loss. Riding astride seemed to be much easier for an inexperienced rider. He thought he was doing the girl a favor- but from the look on her face, he knew he'd messed up again.
"A lady does not ride like a man." She informed him. She shot her sister another ugly look.
"Ah..well...ah..." Benamil looked at his brother and his brother's wife for help. "We can, I mean, ah...I can get another saddle, I suppose. But there won't be much daylight left for the route we planned." He fervently wished, yet again, he could go hide under a rock. It didn't seem to be such a bad way to spend the rest of one's life. There was something to be said for rocks. They didn't have thorny senses of propriety or honor. They just sat there, not really arguing. Wonderful things, rocks.
"I don't care about daylight." she pouted, "I won't be seen riding like a man," she shot another look at her older sister.
"Then stay Peryan, Royan Benamil and I will enjoy a nice evening on our own." Pyunn informed her sister, smiling as the girls expression failed.
If only he could just turn into a rock. And not have to be any part of this. He fiddled with the reins helplessly. "I can get another saddle..."
"Mount up brother, _we_ are going to enjoy the rest of the evening. I think _Lady_ Peryan should get some rest." Royan replied, cutting her off.
Benamil had never loved his brother more than in that moment. Trying to supress a smile- which he knew would anger the Lady more- he offered her the reins and then turned to his own runner and mounted.
Peryan jerked the reigns from his hand and turned her back. How dare Royan speak to her like that. She waited until the triohad headed off and simply continued to stand there, she hadn't a clue as to what to do with the creature.
"Um...do you think she'll be alright?" Benamil wasn't entirely sure who he was more concerned for- the girl or the runner.
"Some one will notice brother. They'll save the poor runner from my sister before too long." Puynn replied and she reined her mare beside her husband.
"Well...if you say so then..." Benamil perked up a bit. The ride seemed to have better chances now of being a pleasant one after all!
