Being a weyrling was harder than he realized.

Frankly put, J'lyas was tired. He loved Braxialth but the baby dragon was up at all hours it seemed -- eating, bathing, or pooping -- and didn't seem to sleep nearly long enough before the cycle started again. It was a lot of exhausting work.

J'lyas got his adorable pain in the arse down to bed and then flopped down on his bunk. Screw going to lessons. He deserved a nap and he was going to take one.

R'lor was checking on another weyrling when he saw the bluerider lay down. "Class is starting soon, J'lyas."

"Yeah, and?" the teenager fired back without opening his eyes. "I didn't sleep last night. I'm taking an hour to catch up."

The Weyrlingmaster's eyebrow went up. "You can catch up tonight by skipping your free time and going to bed early. You will not be skipping class."

"Why not? It's not like it's a hard lesson you're going over or anything. A twelve Turn old can pick it up in five minutes," J'lyas grumbled. He shifted his body to get more comfortable.

"J'lyas." R'lor's voice had a stern edge. It was far from the first time he'd dealt with a stubborn teenager. "Get up."

"No."

His respect for authority was sorely lacking. "How would you like to spend your restday cleaning out the latrines?"

"Fine. Whatever. Just let me sleep, okay?"

Well, this was turning out to be a highlight of R'lor's day. "How would you like me to embarrass you in front of your entire class by dragging you out of here by your ear?"

Irritated that the Weyrlingmaster kept pestering him, J'lyas sat up and snapped, "Will you just let me take a sharding nap?!"

Which woke Braxialth. }: What is happening? Why are we yelling? Who are we fighting? :{ the baby dragon cried, spreading his stubby wings in alarm and trumpeting angrily.

Great. Great feckin' great. "See what you did?" J'lyas growled at R'lor as he slid off the bed to calm his dragon. "Now he's awake and I'm never going to get a nap in."

"You're not getting a nap because you are going to class, bluerider," the Weyrlingmaster said.

}:Yours is being disobedient,:{ Kularth told Braxialth. }:Mine did not mean to disturb you, but your rider must do as he is told.:{

}: Why? :{ Braxialth asked, partly curious, partly defensive of his rider.

"You think we're going to be doing much learning on two candlemarks of sleep?" J'lyas growled. "This whole training plan needs to be readjusted. We're just going to drop from exhaustion at this rate."

"Weyrlinghood training is difficult, but _you_ don't get to decide if you go to class or not," R'lor said. "If you have concerns, you will come to me or one of the other staff. You will _ask_ permission before you do anything outside of your schedule."

}:All must obey,:{ Kularth said. }:When you fight Thread, you must follow the commands of your leaders, or you and others will be hurt. Yours must learn to respect authority.:{

Braxialth snorted. He thought Kularth was sounding like a big word that his rider had used that meant someone was being a really hard and bad ruler but he couldn't remember the word.

Meanwhile, J'lyas said, "Yeah, sure, fine. Whatever you say, Weyrlingmaster," as he gave Braxialth a comforting pat. "Go back to sleep, Brax. I'll be back after this stupid class."

}: Classes are stupid, :{ Braxialth agreed. }: Naps are better. :{

"I will let this one incident slide, but if you speak to me like this again, there will be consequences." R'lor was going to keep an eye on J'lyas.

"Heard that one before," J'lyas muttered under his breath. Great. Just another bully to deal with here at the Weyr.

At least he had Braxialth on his side now.
