Chandrany

Back at the meeting point, Digger was sitting on the rock that was being used as the meeting point, the little brown firelizard clad in a bow tie with a small card hanging from it declaring himself the “Transport Coordinator”.

Oh, no. Was he first? No one else was there. Hayazi had not even been certain he was allowed to come, but Chandrany had encouraged him, despite some of the others being less than enthused about him overhearing about the celebration.

And now, well. It seemed he should have waited and arrived a little later. This was bound to be awkward. He waved to the firelizard. He was never quite sure whether they were slightly less smart dragons or dragons were slightly smarter firelizards, but he assumed the little creature must know what he was about. He was conspicuously labeled, after all.

“Um, hi. Is this the place for the party?” He looked around, half-certain he had been given a false location to keep him from showing up to the real party.

Digger whistled and chattered something incomprehensible and a few minutes later the much larger brown appeared to ferry guests.

Just as Aeoluth was landing, Chandrany came up behind Hayazi, touching his shoulder. “Hey! You decided to come! I was afraid you might wuss out.” Her tone was teasing, but she honestly hadn’t been sure. She couldn’t decide if he was anti-social or just shy, but he’d seemed uncertain, so she hadn’t seen any harm in explicitly inviting him. “We can ride up together. Don’t worry, I promise Cirina doesn’t bite.”

On her shoulder, Gallant -- the third brown now in the transport spot, smallest of all -- gave a hesitant but curious cheep to both Digger and Aeoluth. They seemed to be doing important things, even if he didn’t understand what. Flower said nothing, shifting on Chandrany’s other shoulder to shyly hide her face behind the girl’s neck.

Hayazi smiled with genuine relief to see Chandrany again. That was a fairly good sign that she was not just hazing him, and there really was a party. Probably.

“I’m not scared of Cirina.” He might have been a _little_ scared of her. “Are all of those firelizards yours…?”

“Just the two clinging to me. This is Gallant, and this is Flower.” Chandrany reached up to scratch each of them in turn. “They’re still pretty young, only a few months old. And not as well-trained yet as Digger there.” She nodded towards the firelizard in the bowtie, taking a small bit of dried meat from a pouch at her waist and offering it to Digger. “Or as well-dressed, I guess.”

Digger took the meat with the well-mannered gentleness of an over pampered pet.

She looked up at the brown dragon waiting for them. “I’m going to assume this is our ride? Come on, let’s head up.”

It _was_ a pretty snazzy bowtie.

“Oh! Thank you for the ride, uh… friend.” The dragon distracted Hayazi from greeting the firelizards. “Um, do you want to climb up first, or… should I?”

Aeoluth snorted at them and offered a leg up. Upon closer inspection, it was hard to miss that he had a matching, slightly bigger bowtie tied to his chest straps.

Chandrany climbed up without answering, settled herself, then reached down to offer him a hand, smirking a little. She might not have her own dragon yet, but she’d grown up around them and was aware that he probably hadn’t. “If you ever get a brown of your own someday, don’t tell him you rode this guy first,” she said with a grin.

“You think _I_ could get a brown?” It seemed unlikely to Hayazi. But he never would have believed he would become a Candidate only a short while ago.

Chandrany blinked. “Well sure, why not? I figure you’ve got as good of a chance as anyone else. We’ve _all_ got as good a chance as anyone else,” she said fiercely. It was something she told herself a dozen times a day, after all.

Hayazi had been certain the dragons would, by and large, see him the same way people did, with some few, maybe one exception. But a brown?

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
