Description: J'lyas doesn't quite go where he's supposed to during weyrling training
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 10, day 11 of Turn 12
Notes: Notes: title comes from a matching Bring Me The Horizon song
R'vkal stood next to Indrath, listening intently as the Weyrlingmaster went over their lesson for the day. He couldn't help the flitters that fluttered in his belly. Aside from Thread, this was the most dangerous part of their training. He didn't want to die. Not yet.
"Make your visuals as clear as possible, and then pass them through your dragon to Kularth. When we confirm the visual is correct, you'll take off to a safe height." R'lor looked around the group to make sure they were paying attention. "Then you'll give us the visual _again_, to make sure it's clear in your mind. You must not get distracted. The image must be clear and you must hold it until you emerge from /between/." Some weyrlings looked eager, others nervous. "Do we have a volunteer to go first?"
"I will!" one of the brown weyrlings volunteered quickly. He mounted his dragon, visualized a spot high above the Weyrbowl for his dragon to relay to Kularth, and then waited for the go-head.
R'lor recieved a clear image of the Star Stones and relayed his approval. }:You may take off,:{ Kularth told the brown.
The pair took off, hovered, repeated the visualization, got their confirmation, and disappeared, reappearing high above the Weyr. A triumphant shout floated down just before the brown tucked his wings and landed back in front of the weyrling class.
"Well done," the Weyrlingmaster said with a proud smile. This day was always full of such mixed feelings. It was an important milestone in their training, but it was also the most dangerous, along with the first time they faced Threadfall. "Who wants to go next?"
Two greenriders eagerly volunteered. The first one had a slightly unclear visualization but was able to get it right on the second try and successfully went /between/. The second ended up several dragonlengths away from where they should have been, but that could easily be corrected with practice.
"We'll go, sir," R'vkal volunteered next, feeling as though a bronzerider should be stepping up to lead. His gaze fell on the Star Stones as he thought about what it would look like from being higher up, how he wanted Indrath to be at _this_ position, not lower or higher. **Share that with the Weyrlingmaster,** he asked his dragon.
R'lor was pleased to see the young bronzerider step up.
}:The image is good,:{ Kularth told his rider as he passed on the visual. }:You make take off,:{ he said to Indrath.
Indrath lifted off, hovered, passed the image back and forth again to Kularth, and then, once all cleared, hopped the short distance /between/. R'vkal let out a startled shout as they were now quite higher, almost instantly from the black of /between/. }: Seems easy, :{ Indrath remarked as he floated down, talking to Kularth quietly. But R'vkal knew that it wasn't something he could ever get lax about.
"We're next!" J'lyas shouted, shouldering forward before Indrath could land. Braxialth rattled his wings. The pair had been watching everyone else do this boring short hop from the ground up to the top of the Weyr and were getting impatient. **We're not going to do that. Hopping up a few flights of stairs is easy. We're gonna do something better,** J'lyas told his dragon as he mounted. **But we're not going to tell old stuffy pants what we're doing, okay?**
Braxialth rattled his wings again. }: Got it. :{
J'lyas looked up at the Star Stones, memorized them, and gave the image to Braxialth. **Show the Weyrlingmaster that.**
R'lor and Kularth cleared them and waited for the pair to reach a safe height from the sandy Bowl. }:Send us the image again.:{
Hovering, Braxialth sent the image again. But after he did, J'lyas sent him a new, different image. **There's where we're _really_ going.**
**Nice and clear,** R'lor said with a nod. He gave the signal for /between/ at the same time Kularth gave them the go-ahead.
Of course it was nice and clear. The image that J'lyas sent to Braxialth was of his home Hold, the place where he had spent so many hated Turns being bullied. And now, he was on a dragon, and he was going to show all of them how much _better_ he was! They'd be licking his boots now!
Braxialth disappeared /between/. And did not reappear at the Star Stones.
R'lor waited a few extra breaths and then fear clutched at him when they still didn't appear.
}:They are not gone, I can still feel Braxialth,:{ Kularth assured his rider. }:Where are you?:{ he asked the young blue.
Braxialth didn't answer. He was too busy bugling triumphantly, almost drowning out his rider, who was making a rude gesture at the Hold as they hovered over it. "You see? You see this?! You thought I was a nothing! A nobody! And I've got a fecking _dragon_ now!" He continued to do this as more people, confused, came out the Hold to see who was shouting.
}:Braxialth! Where are you? Are you hurt?:{ Kularth focused harder, trying to see if the blue was injured, or scared, but he seemed . . . happy?
}: Oh, we're visiting J'lyas's family! They don't seem too happy that we're here but who cares, :{ Braxialth admitted with haughty happiness. In his vindication, he accidentally showed Kularth exactly where they were and then said, }: Oops. :{ And he closed off his mind as best as he could.
R'lor's fear shifted to anger. "J'lyas and Braxialth are all right." he assured the class. "I have to go get them." He handed the class off and vaulted to Kularth's neck. He already had his riding straps on in case of just such an occurance. But usually it was an _accident_ when a weyrling jumped somewhere else.
}:What were you thinking?:{ Kularth roared as he came out of /between/.
"Hey, how'd he get here?" J'lyas asked in surprise even as Braxialth cringed at both the question and the roar from Kularth. "Whershit, what a party pooper," J'lyas muttered. He had been counting on it taking the Weyrlingmaster at least an hour before figuring out where they were.
}: I could see where we were going clearly. It was fine, :{ Braxialth assured Kularth with some defensiveness to his tone.
}:It is _not_ fine! You disobeyed.:{ Kularth's eyes whirled red. }:You will come back with us now!:{ Kularth sent the image of Dolphin Cove as he pressed his will on Braxialth.
The younger dragon resisted for a long moment. }: Uuuugh, :{ he finally said dramatically to both his rider and Kularth. Then, just to J'lyas, he said, }: We have to go back. We made Wherrymaster Kularth angry. We can come back and do this again though, now that I know where it is! :{
They'd be do latrine duty for sevendays but it'd be worth it, J'lyas decided. The thought of being able to come back and flaunt Braxialth like this kept his defiant arrogance up. "Deal. Take us back to the Weyr so we can show that boring stick in the mud that we know how to do this."
With directions from Kularth, Braxialth gave one more final defiant bugle towards the Hold and then blinked back to the Weyr, reappearing above the gathered weyrlings. Despite how much trouble they were in, he made a smug sound as he landed.
As soon as they landed, R'lor ordered J'lyas to dismount and he marched up to the weyrling. "What were you thinking?"
"That we don't need to do the boring exercise you had the class doing and that we could show you how we were ready for something more challenging?" J'lyas answered, unapologetic. "I know how /between/ works! You've been droning on about it for a sevenday now and how hard is it to imagine exactly where you're going? It's not!"
"Yet you paid zero attention when I talked about the dangers. You could have been lost!" R'lor put his hands on his hips as he glared at J'lyas, anger and worry tangled up inside him.
"I paid plenty of attention the first two times you said it. By the tenth, I was bored, okay? It's not _hard_ to do!" J'lyas tried to argue.
"This is one of the most dangerous parts of your training. You don't have the luxury of being, _bored_, weyrling!" The anger was winning out now. "You'll be watching the rest of your class train but there'll be no more /betweening/ for you today. You'll spend the next month, including restdays, cleaning the latrines and the dragon infirmary. And you'll also be going to the archives and writing me a report on how many weyrling pairs died during /betweening/ training since the Pass began."
"Fine, whatever, you're just mad that I got ahead of you," J'lyas muttered. Ugh, cleaning and a report! Did R'lor really think that doing those things were going to change J'lyas's mind about training? No. Training wasn't that hard and the Weyrlingmasters were being overly cautious because of those stupid weyrlings who _didn't_ pay attention. A month was a lot though. J'lyas groaned angrily again as he flopped down next to Braxialth.
}: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to get us caught, :{ Braxialth apologized.
**Oh, I'm not mad at you _at all_,** J'lyas thought back. **It's fine. Don't worry about it. We'll do whatever stupid punishment he wants for the month and then we'll graduate and then he won't be able to tell us anything. We'll be free to go wherever, whenever.**
Mollified, Braxialth settled down next to his rider to watch the rest of their class train.
