H'run

H'run

Harki woke up with a sore head and a fuzzy tongue just in time to slurp down a giant mug of strong klah and drag her hungover carcas to drills. It was far too sunny and she spent the morning with freezing tears on her cheeks as they practiced high-wind maneuvers over and over until even Cerillith's passes became sloppy with fatigue.

By then Harki's belly was clamouring for real food, so she loaded up her tray with a dragontail sausage in a bun, pickled cabbage and a large bowl of what looked like vegetable soup. When she turned to find a spot to sit she spotted the man who'd done this to her. "You."

"Me?" H'run looked up as Harki slid into the seat beside him. Thankfully she looked as hungover as he felt. The smell from her soup made him nauseous. "Good morning to you, too. Or good afternoon, I suppose. How were drills?"

"Awful." Harki took a giant bite of her dragontail and sighed happily. "I hate you."

"Did you have fun at my party, then?" H'run asked. "You and Saibra seemed to get on well."

The greenrider glared at him. "I had to escort her back to her own weyr, you dimglow. Why'd you invite the Weyrwoman, anyway?"

"Because I _like_ the Weyrwoman, and if she likes me enough then she might promote me to Weyrharper someday."

She took another bite of dragontail. "Aren't you just a Journeyman?"

"Don't talk with your mouth full. It's a disgusting habit." H'run made a face and hoped that she wouldn't ask him any more awkward questions about his knots. "Did something... _happen_ between the two of you once you were alone?"

"Ugh. What?!" Harki nearly choked on her dragontail as she imagined kissing Saibra. "Why would you say it like that?!"

He shrugged a shoulder and stared across the Dining Cavern, pleased that his distraction had worked. "It's going around. So, what was the issue then?"

"She's the _Weyrwoman_! And she likes cheese," Harki said plaintively. "_I_ like cheese."

"And?"

"And then we decided to have a _cheese_party_."

H'run burst out laughing. "A cheese party? You can't be serious!"

Harki set down her dragontail and stared at her plate. "I am. I'm in so much trouble. She's the _Weyrwoman_ and I'm a mess, H'run. I'll say something stupid or light her weyr on fire or something and she'll banish me from Dragonsfall Weyr forever. Stop laughing. I'm being serious!"

"I'm sorry!" H'run did not stop laughing. "I can't imagine a more different pair than the two of you! A cheese party? I am _definintely_ coming to that."

Harki nearly melted with relief. "What if she doesn't invite you?"

"I don't care, I'm coming anyway." H'run put a hand on Harki's shoulder. "You'll be fine, darling. Saibra isn't a monster."

"No. _I'm_ the monster." Harki sighed. "What if there are multiple forks or-- shells, what would I wear to the Weyrwoman's party? Everything I have is either falling apart or barely covers my butt. What if I'm too sexy and I accidentally steal her man?"

H'run laughed again at that. "Darling, as lovely as your butt is, I don't see that happening. I'll help you find something to wear. It will be _fun_."

"Fun for you," Harki muttered. "I still hate you."

The bluerider smiled. "I know. Eat your dragontail, and tell me who else is invited."
