By'ler

“Not long now,” R’vkal said to By’ler as class dismissed for that day. All of the lectures recently had been geared towards what came _after_ training. Indrath seemed ready to get into the air, ready to fight, which still unsettled R’vkal’s stomach in some way but also cemented that sense of duty that he now saw he had as a dragonrider.

“How long do you think it will take one of our boys to catch a green?” By’ler asked with a grin that showcased one of the dimples in his cheeks.

R’vkal’s eyes widened and then he blinked several times as though the thought hadn’t yet crossed his mind. He thought of his last dealing with a greenrider, Reyela, and how disastrous that had been. How awkward would it be if Indrath caught Brandith! Just the thought of waking up in bed with the beautiful greenrider had R’vkal turning red. “Uh…I…”

The other young bronzerider cocked an eyebrow. “You’re not… you’re not a _virgin_, are you?”

R’vkal’s blush deepened but he said defensively, “No, I’m not! I was engaged before Indrath. Wasn’t a prude about it.” His fiancee had been a sweet lover, even if they had been keeping their tumbles secret since they were at the Hold.

“Oh, well… Why was your face turning so red?” If the man wasn’t a virgin, what was to fear from a mating flight?

The other bronze weyrling began sputtering. “‘Cause it’s not something you…you just…we’re dragonriders! Not flight moths!” Even though his volume had risen, his tone was still mostly embarrassed, as though he felt very awkward talking about sex so candidly still. “Can’t stop Indrath if he wants but doesn’t mean I have to start taking bets on it,” he grumbled in a lower tone.

“Speaking of flightmoths,” By’ler continued as if oblivious to R’vkal’s bristling. “We’ll be getting a piece of that action now, too. Whenever our boys chase and don’t win, there’s always a treasure trove of women waiting outside… and men, whatever your taste.”

R’vkal shot By’ler a look. “Definitely women,” he answered. Not that there was anything wrong with liking men but it was still a thing that R’vkal was trying to accept about the Weyr.

“Definitely women,” By’ler agreed, thinking of one dolphineer in particular. “You want to go down to the beach and throw ball? You need more practice before the next waterball game.”

The other bronze weyrling made a defensive grunting sound. “Didn’t do too bad that last game,” he said. “Better than T’lab did. He’s just out to score the most fouls. We’ll never beat the Barrier Lake team like that.”

“It’s really not fair,” By’ler said as they grabbed their gear and headed down to the beach. “They get to practice and play in the calm waters of the lake. They don’t have to worry about the tide and breakers while they’re trying to throw ball.”

“Usually said that calm seas don’t make good seacrafters but seems opposite here,” R’vkal grumbled in agreement. “Least we get to play with dolphins. That makes for some different fun.”

“The dolphins are fun,” the other bronzerider conceded as they reached the beach. Tossing a towel down on the sand, he kicked off his shoes and shrugged out of his shirt down to his swimming shorts. “This is also the perfect place to scope out hot girls,” he mused out loud as he looked around.

R’vkal wasn’t going to disagree but he didn’t agree out loud either. He followed suit in stripping down to swim shorts. Even though he was in a fitter shape than he had been when he had arrived at the Weyr, he was still self-conscious about that shape, as evidenced by how he blushed when a woman whistled appreciatively. “Wish they wouldn’t do that,” he muttered.

“Why not? How else are they going to let you know they’re willing to …. your…. -” and conveniently the vulgar things that By’ler said about certain bodily appendages were swallowed up as a dragon thundered out of /between/ above the beach.

“Show off,” R’vkal remarked as they both watched the blue dragon make a tight circle before landing. “Speaking of dolphins, how about we go see Oriene soon? Bet she’d like that.”

This brought By’ler’s attention around, as he’d been scoping out ‘hotties.’ “Oh, that would be great! I haven’t seen her since those dolphineers came up for the hatching feast.”

“Wonder if she misses us. Think she’s gonna come back?”

“Well, I feel positive she misses _me_,” By’ler grinned at R’vkal. “I think she’ll come back. Could you imagine giving up all of this,” he spread his hands out sweepingly, “to go live at the Dolphin Hall? I mean, there are worse places, like Emerald Falls or something, but she’s got more possibilities if she comes back here.”

R’vkal grunted thoughtfully. “Couldn’t imagine going back to a Hall or a Hold after all this,” he agreed. “Dolphins’re nice and all but they’re not dragons.”

“But then, she didn’t get a dragon, did she? I guess life at the Weyr would be a bit less colorful without Reviath.”

}:Just a _bit_?:{ the bronze butted in.

By’ler ignored him and said, “Maybe we can convince her to come back the next time there’s eggs on the Sands. It’s not like she needs to be here for the Candidate classes. She knows them by heart, probably.”

“Probably,” R’vkal agreed. “Bet she’d come back if you asked. She likes you.”

The other bronzerider’s eyes cut sideways at R’vkal. “You think?” He suspected. He hoped, certainly.

“Pretty sure. The way she looks at you. She’s all sunshine. Well, more sunshine, I guess.”

By’ler pondered that and hoped it to be true.
