Date: month 13, day 21 of Turn 12
“Thank you for the meeting, _Weyrleader_,” W’ser said with a familiar grin as he entered K’valdran’s office and shook his hand. “I still can’t believe it.” When W’ser looked at K’valdran, he still saw the kid that was a few Turns younger than him, running around together in a pack of feral children in the Dragonsfall creche. But now here they were… all grown up, and with responsibilities.
“It’s been too long, hasn't it?“ K'valdran chuckled, clapping his old friend on the shoulder. “Almost a decade since old “Hears All” D’wrayt wore the knots… It's about time one of us weyrbrats had a chance at the head of formation again!”
“Heard and witnessed,” K’thyr added heartily as he came through the door. He gave both K’valdran and W’ser a polite bow of his head but the twinkle in his dark eyes was jovial, familiar, and offset the formality of the meeting. “Did we need klah for this? I know it’s early in the morning.”
“Way ahead of you,” K'valdran said.
He ushered the dragonhealers into the chamber, waving them into the stout leather armchairs opposite the great desk of office. The setting was formal, but K'valdran’s manner was easy as he poured them each a drink from the klah service he had called up. Once they were all settled he turned to regard W’ser. “So, what's on your mind?”
“I’ve been Weyrdragonhealer for seven, nearly eight, Turns and…. I’m done, fellas,” W’ser said honestly, looking between K’valdran and K’thyr. “I’ve always enjoyed the work, but this past Turn, the amount of casualties…. It’s taken its toll. I’d like to step back from the position and be able to focus again on just teaching the apprentices and journeymen.”
I’serin had a lot to answer for, thought K’valdran-- and not for the first time. The easy warmth in his eyes faded, his expression sobering with the topic and the pain that tinged W’ser’s account. “I know your record. You have served long and well,” he said at last. “You provided a rare spot of consistency during a time where this Weyr has seen far too much turnover. If you now wish to step back and dedicate yourself to teaching, I will not stop you, but I also won’t lie-- this is a sensitive time for us. While I strongly believe that the worst of the casualties were caused by nothing more or less than I’serin’s own failings--something I was able to immediately address--the increase in injuries during his tenure means I have inherited command of a fighting force that is below strength. The next few months will determine if the damage can be staunched by more competent leadership, or if the issue will snowball. I _need_ a smooth transition and a Weyrdragonhealer that will hit the ground running with me. I trust you have recommendations?”
He guessed now why K’thyr had come and a spark of K’valdran’s good humor returned, the corners of his eyes crinkling.
W’ser shot a grin at K’thyr. “I do have someone in mind. Seeing as how I’m not dying or retiring, I’ll be around to help make the transition as smooth as possible. People need chances at leadership. Shells, if I’serin had been forced into leadership roles more at River Bluff, if their Weyrleaders had encouraged some rotation, perhaps he’d not have been so ill-prepared to be Weyrleader.” It was the most scathing speech the mild-mannered brownrider had ever given.
K’thyr pounded his fist on the armrest in emphatic agreement. “I’d be glad to work with W’ser on this changeover. Eometh and I won’t let either of you down,” he promised, his dark eyes alight with conviction. He _knew_ they could do this, especially under K’valdran’s leadership. He had a good working relationship with the current staff of dragonhealers and with Alyndra as the Weyrhealer, he knew they would see strong teamwork there. And, like W’ser said, it wasn’t as though he was leaving. K’thyr could still rely on him for information and leadership. This was honestly the best situation to come into, given how perilous their jobs were.
K'valdran grinned as well, following W’ser’s gaze and meaning to K’thyr. “Well, with that promise and W’ser’s endorsement, it sounds like we have our man,” he laughed, pleased that the problem had so neat a solution. He trusted K’thyr. He knew his work ethic. “W’ser. I know the dragoninfirmary will be all the stronger with you teaching and passing on all you know. K’thyr. Glad to have you on board. Together we'll get our forces back into a healthy place.”
“It will take me some time to get used to flying full Thread again,” W’ser admitted. “Which Wing would you have me in, K’valdran?”
“Take as long as you need for a smooth handover with K’thyr, and then report to Alpine when you’re ready. They could use more veteran bronzeriders and the mid-altitude flight will be good to get you up to speed again.” K’valdran didn’t need to reference the rosters. He was well aware of their needs. “I’ll tell L’val to expect you.”
“Perfect,” W’ser agreed. He liked L’val. The Hears-All-Dragons Wingleader was solid and dependable, and while L’val wasn’t a native Dragonfall son, W’ser didn’t often receive injured dragonriders from his Wing.
“He had better treat you well,” K’thyr added but there was a humorous glow to his dark eyes that diminished the threat of the words. He clasped W’ser on the upper arm, his expression turning grateful and humble. “Thank you. For this,” he said in a heartfelt tone.
“For the Weyr,” the brownrider replied, glad that he could rest easy knowing K’valdran and K’thyr would take care of things.
