Description: K'mai keeps Abrei entertained while she's recovering from her surgery.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 12, day 22 of Turn 3
"K'mai! Come sit with me!" Abrei waved to the bluerider from the chair that one of her journeymen had dragged out to the beach for her. They'd been stubbornly resistant to the idea of letting her spend a few candlemarks outside with her leg up, but Abrei had overruled them with the firm decree that one more day spent inside in her weyr would end up in all of them doing nothing but brewing numbweed for a month. A smile lit the young man's face as he made his way over. "Masterhealer Abrei," he said with a playful bow, "to what do I owe this honor?"
Abrei wrinkled her nose at him and pointed to the ground next to her.
"Someone's got to keep me from going out of my mind with boredom until I can walk again. And you've shown a willingness to put up with my poor conversational skills in the past, so I think today it's your turn."
"I'd be happy to talk to you." K'mai plopped down beside her. "Although I do know _other_ ways of entertaining people."
"Oh?" Abrei gave him her usual raised eyebrow. "Anything you could get away with without me smacking you with a crutch?"
K'mai chuckled. "Probably not." At least, not anything he currently had in mind.
"Then maybe we should stick to talking, for now." And she'd pretend she hadn't had a brief moment of wondering if it might be relaxing to spend an evening with K'mai. The boy was probably almost a decade younger than her, and she wasn't quite sure her ego was up to looking inexperienced in front of him. "Alright." He smiled. He would just have to keep wondering what Abrei might be like in bed. "So, how's your leg doing?"
"It's supposed to heal up quickly this time, which is good. I'll probably only be hobbling around for a month this time before I'm mostly back on my feet." "So for the next month, I should be able to outrun you? I might have to take advantage of that," K'mai said, mischief sparkling in his eyes.
Abrei snorted. "I think you can probably outrun me even when I'm not injured. If I were graceful, I wouldn't have ended up with a broken leg to begin with."
"That may be true, but I want all the advantage I can get if I'm running away from you," he laughed.
"There's a better way," Abrei retorted, rolling her eyes at him. "How about you just don't do anything that would make it necessary to run away in the first place?"
"Because it's fun to be a little naughty sometimes, dear Weyrhealer." K'mai said with a boyish grin.
Abrei couldn't help but smile at him. "I think you're naughty a lot more often than sometimes, K'mai."
"Guilty," he said. "And I would be a lot more naughty if I could get more smiles like that out of you."
"How about I smile at you when you're behaving instead?" Safer that way for everyone involved. **Though at least he isn't a bronzerider...**
K'mai put a hand to his chin and gazed upward, thoughtful. "Hmmm, that just might be worth it."
Abrei graced him with a more genuine smile. "Come on, K'mai... it can't be _that_ hard to behave for just a little while."
"Oh, it's not _too_ hard . . . as long as there's incentive." The bluerider winked, wondering if his friends would believe he'd gotten the Weyrhealer to smile this much in such a short period.
The Weyrhealer made a noise suspiciously like she was trying not to laugh.
"Honestly, K'mai... are you even _capable_ of saying anything that doesn't sound suggestive? I'm starting to think I should give you up as a lost cause."
He laughed, throwing his head back. "Ok, ok. Let me try." K'mai cleared his throat dramatically. "The sky is blue. There, that wasn't suggestive, was it?"
"Not particularly," Abrei conceded. "Of course, if I asked you what you wanted as a prize for managing it, I'd just be setting you up for failure."
"You got me there," K'mai said.
"Well, I'm proud of you in any case," she said with a hint of that same smile. "It's worth a few smiles to make you stick around and entertain me while I can't move."
"Thank you, dear Weyrhealer." K'mai bowed his head slightly. "I'm happy to entertain you in any way I can."
Abrei grinned. "You might regret saying that. I might make you play chess with me. Or cards, but I'm terrible at cards."
"Stip poker?" he suggested with a grin.
"I tried that once," Abrei retorted. "Once was enough. Though I think they had to be cheating... logically it should be impossible for me to lose _that_ many hands in a row!"
"It's a little hard to imagine you playing strip poker," K'mai said, laughing. "Hmmm, but then again, maybe it isn't so hard to imagine . . ." He tilted his head to the side with a distant look in his eyes.
Abrei kicked sand at him with her good leg. "Oh, stop it." She'd thought she was immune to blushing after R'han, but she thought her cheeks might be growing a little pink now. K'mai ducked, laughing again. "Oh, ho! Abrei, am I making you _blush_!?"
"How about you put my clothes back on in your head," she replied, making a face at him. "If you stop teasing me while I'm crippled and can't chase after you, I promise to play poker with you when I'm better."
His eyebrow went up. "Strip poker?"
She snorted. "Maybe. Can I start off with more than one set of clothing?"
"If you're as bad as you say you are, go right ahead." The bluerider chuckled.
"We'll see," Abrei said evasively, quite sure she had no intention of playing any such game with K'mai. Not unless she actually _had_ ulterior motives, in which case there were probably easier ways to make the bluerider take his clothing off.
