Valbath's great sleeping form loomed over the cliffs of Dragonsfall like a beacon of ill-intent.

Today.

Days of slow heat and the soft glow pooling on her hide had led them here, to her ledge, where she was unlikely to make it to midday, not with the way her irritation rooted its way deeper and deeper through her sleep. A faint growl rolled out across the ledge. A wing flicked. Unconscious reactions against what was binding together beneath the surface. The antique cast of her hide took on the embered luminosity of new life.

Agyta was in her office, the preferred place to be even on a normal day. She had bathed early when the sun was just crawling over the rim and set her hair in tight, intricate braids that criss-crossed the back of her skull, keeping it tightly in place even during the worst Threadfalls. The lower half she left to cascade loose down her back, sleek and shiny and soft with scented oil, and spent the next few hours in solitude with only klah and Flake for company. It was a still morning, the air outside warm and meandering and menacing, a darkness looming on the horizon. Like that of a gathering storm about to break.

}:Mine.:{ Teyrabth pressed at his rider’s attention, sudden and intent, jarring H’kami from his late breakfast, the brown's sense that _something_ was going to happen for once sharper than his rider's.

That growing luminosity did not escape Aluneth’s observant gaze. It was one thing for his rider to drag him away from the Weyr for his daughter, Galgaith’s, flights but there nothing I’serin could say about the other golds residing in Dragonsfall. But it was not yet time. Aluneth settled in to wait.

Daith, in the meanwhile, was admiring _all_ of the lovely lady dragons of Dragonsfall while his rider met with one of the Wingleaders. Running errands on behalf of Barrier Lake’s leadership meant that they both got to be sociable. Sometimes they even came back another evening for an overnight visit. Maybe today would bring about one of those encounters.

An unmistakable current ran through the air; ever growing. One which any bronze worth his marks wouldn’t have missed. Wouldn’t have been watching for the chance of that decision. Mezanth stirred from his sunbathing; cautiously alert. Eyes whirling he turned his gaze out across the Weyrbowl and let the feeling come; today held such promise.

Sanderveth did not rouse from his lounging position on the edge of his ledge, but his eyes whirled with interest as he observed the heightening color of the lovely Valbath. Shuttering one set of eyelids, he glanced at the movement of other males around the cliffs of Dragonsfall. He was not the only one noticing. He snorted a little as he spotted young Setoth.

There was no lounging for the young bronze, whose wheat-colored hide gleamed from a recent wash and oil. Setoth’s wings were flared and flexed - ready.

Norrianth was restless all morning. It'd taken a long time for him to learn the ebbs and flows of the gold and green's mating cycles, and even longer still for him to learn how to chase. But now that he had a few green wins under his…straps… he was ready to try again.

Roquath, on the other hand, knew it was coming. He'd warned his rider of his intent the moment Valbath started to shine, both over confidently and stupidly, so certain that E'kavas wouldn't try and take him out of the Weyr despite all the threats that he would. It was not a senior queen, not yet, and the tantrum of pulling him away from a mating flight was worse than just letting the brown tire himself out.

Riakerth sent a testing thought towards his rider as he watched the glowing gold. His had Opinions on who he could and could not chase, and the bronze generally acquiesced, it being easier to go along than deal with the headache of fighting his rider. There was no firm denial or sense of distaste from his rider this time, however, and the bronze settled more alertly on his ledge, stretching his wings out to let movement and sunlight warm the muscles.

Novath stirred, his eyelids flicking open, and he raised his head to gaze across from his ledge on the heights of the Weyr to that of his close neighbor, the magnificent, imposing gold Valbath. He'd been watching her with growing interest since the first hint of a heightened shimmer about her, sensed as much as seen. Though new to Dragonsfall, Novath knew the signs, and the anticipation of pursuit began to heat his sun-warmed blood. It wouldn't be long before he had the chance to show this new Weyr his skill in the chase as well as in the fighting Wings.

On Agyta’s shoulder, Flake was enjoying a cuddle she rarely had to herself when things were this quiet. There wasn’t much time spent in her office without the accompaniment of work, but it was pointless to dig into anything. Instead, she smiled at the drawing Avalea had left, taped over the lip of her desk, now brushing her thigh. A yellow sun and a yellow dragon twinned with long, flowing rays on a page. **She drew you smiling,** Agyta thought wryly. Savored another sip of her klah, the heat spreading through her chest, her stomach, and all along her arms. It was a stolen moment, and it wouldn’t be much longer.

The first sign of change came as Valbath shifted. A sound as delicate as a boulder crashing down the cliff-face. Her eyes shot open, the barest hint of desire swallowed up in the flood of anger, adrenaline and overwhelm. But there was a certain smooth, serpentine sensuality to the way the queen hauled herself up, flared her massive wings, and screamed her challenge at the Weyr below. Flake screamed and disappeared /between/. Agyta sat forward with a hand on her chest. **You will _blood_ that.** She pressed her will over the torrent of outrage that thundered back as a massive black shadow enveloped the feeding pens.

Teyrabth roared in answer, eyes whirling, and the brown abandoned his sprawl near the dining cavern entrance to arrow for the feeding pens as well. He avoided the gold, staying well out of her reach as he stooped on the herd from the other end of the pen, snatching one and tearing it only after the queen had taken her kill first.

Silently, the petite bronze seemed to melt from his ledge and towards the gathering around the feeding pens. He answered the Queen with his presence, nothing more. A flashy roar seemed out of place. Especially as he was already overshadowed by the sizes of the other dragons who openly declared their intent. Mezanth arched his own neck and wings, taking down a beast in a single strike. Hot, beating meat pressed to the roof of his mouth as blood drained down his gullet. Only a flicker in his eyes showed the fight with his rider over the action of blooding.

Isaoth sinuously moved his head, watching, watching, watching. Ready. }: Mine, :{ he rumbled possessively, mostly to himself. She would be his and his alone.

Valbath’s tail lashed fiercely on her descent, almost hitting an arriving bronze. She swooped, landing hard, her teeth sinking deep through the screaming flail of a herdbeast. Iron and muscle called to her. It was as if she’d never eaten before. So easy, so delicious, so _close_. In a rush of savage hunger that knew no limit, she was filled with the need to tear and chew and swallow. To gorge and gnash and gorge some more.

But before all of that, stronger than anything else, another need-- to win the war with the woman in her head.

**Blood. Only.** The moment stretched, Valbath shrieking with vehement defiance and frustration and Agyta refusing to let any of it win, until there was only fire and tension between them. **Blood is what you need, my love. So that you will fly far and high.** Too full and she wouldn’t outfly a single one of them.

Another acid roar flooded the pens, but in the end only blood poured in. Agyta touched her chest again, able to draw a breath this time, her long legs carrying her almost as fast as her dragon drank deep.

H'kami blurted a not quite apology to the rider he'd been talking to, the conversation suddenly almost irrelevant to Teyrabth’s certainty and rising _want_ of his own.

He turned, and headed for the flight rooms.

I’serin excused himself from his duties as Aluneth descended upon his own kill, needing no bending of his rider’s will to blood it. He knew this game: to fly as fast and as hard as he could. If he could not have Chioneth, he would have Valbath instead!

“Oh, that’ll make for an interesting story to tell Q’vettan when we get back,” H’stre remarked, humored as he felt Daith’s attention fall keenly on the glowing gold dragon. He winked at the Wingleader he had been speaking to. “Best of luck up there,” he said with congenial sportsmanship as they both headed towards their new destination.

X’yior had felt the growing tension in his dragon and had made efforts to excuse himself. His pace quickening as the pieces of what was happening slipped into place. Only once did he have to remind his bronze to blood his kill. The melding of minds was already taking a turn for the lustful; and while Mezanth did not declare himself his rider could feel the desire pulsing through every vein in his body. Mezanth always flew his heart out.

Riakerth made no effort to muscle in between the other bronzes, did not bother with roaring or posturing. This was a competition of speed and stamina in the air, and it did not matter what any of the other males thought of him or his presence. Nor, really, did the queen’s opinion matter. Wooing her was something that took time, catching just required being fast and smart.

Novath glided in a lazy arc down towards the feeding pens, all self-assured confidence, and chose his landing spot at a judicious distance from the queen: not too close, not so far as to seem timid and escape notice. He paid no attention to the less worthy males, but seized and dispatched a beast with a practiced snap of his jaws and sucked it dry. He'd already summoned his rider, and was pleased to find V'karel as enthusiastic as he was for the flight. By the time he'd joined the other bronzeriders, desire had overtaken amusement at his dragon's complacent manner, and he was just as certain - he was going to win.
