Notes: Follows "Ideals"
Larken couldn't keep the soft little smile from her lips as she ran the brush through her long hair--now almost completely dry from the bath she'd taken a while ago. Faranth...it had been such a wonderful evening. The aerial display of the wild fire-lizards had been stunning...with that setting sun gleaming down on their sparkling bodies, making them glimmer like jewels in the air. Especially the little queen--what a beauty she'd been! And for M'tone to be sitting there with her...
Blushing, she shifted, leaning back comfortably against the pillows of the bed. It had been so easy to just let everything go for a little while and talk about things that she normally would have never even thought of to say. His questions, when he'd asked them, had been blunt, but not rude. He never took on a judegemental tone with her.
Not like Ojisan sometimes would.
"Good evening, love," her husband said as he walked into their sleeping chamber, carrying two cases and a folder of music under his arm. "Faranth, what a day." With a groan, he set the cases down in the corner and set the music on the chair beside them. "I'm sorry I couldn't meet you for supper, my dear. Our practice just ended."
Sitting up straighter, Larken gave him a sympathetic look. No doubt most nights were going to be like this now... It shamed her a little that she didn't feel quite so bad about it as she once might of... "How did it go?" she asked, setting the brush aside.
"Not so well. We have a lot more work than we thought before Turns End,"
he sighed as he picked up the sleeping clothes she had thoughtfully laid out for him. "I'm afraid its going to mean a lot more late nights this month."
"Oh... I'm sorry to hear that," she murmured, but already her thoughts were turning--unbidden--to about how she could possibly spend her newfound free time in the evenings... Perhaps she could go for late evening walks along the beach and stargaze. Shards, she hadn't done that since she was a little girl.
"I'm sorry too, love." He quickly changed into his night clothes and turned out the lights. Slipping into bed beside her, the harper wrapped his arms around his young wife and kissed her neck softly. "I hope you know I would rather be spending the time with you, Larken. It's just unavoidable. This concert is very important, both for the Hall and for my career. I hope you can understand."
"I understand," she reassured him quietly after a moment, tentatively curling closer. "You know you have my support." Faranth...what else could she do? Was she daring enough to seek out M'tone during one of those evenings?
"I do know, and I appreciate it," he sighed his arms squeezing her a bit tighter. "It's just that after Senastin developed that tendon problem we had to find a new drummer, and now of course we have to train Gabaran on all the songs, so it takes extra long."
"Poor Senastin..." Not that she would do anything...rash...with M'tone, of course. Her cheeks reddened slightly at the thought. But to just to be with him.... "I'm sure Gabaran will catch on soon?" She wondered what the brownrider would say if he opened his door to find her there when all the halls were growing dark...
"He's a very talented drummer, but his sight reading needs a tremendous amount of work," Ojisan murmured against the skin of her neck. "I'm not sure how he got this far, to be honest. Although his improvisation skills are excellent, and when he hears a tune he can pick it up pretty well. But the kind of music we play just doesn't condone improvisation. It's straight forward and by the note. It has to be if it is to be considered part of Journeyman Poser's Mastery in composition."
She could just imagine him grinning down at her, maybe a brow raised in teasing query. Then he'd let her inside, and he would offer her something to drink. Mmm...but would she accept? She couldn't hold her alcohol very well. **Larken, Larken...you're playing with fire.** "It does?"
"Of course. The Masters in charge of his promotion have to hear the pieces _exactly_ as written so they can judge its quality. If we improvise we are changing his piece either for the better or for worse, and it must be judged only on its own merit."
M'tone wouldn't push her, but she could just see the grin of encouragement he'd flash her way... White teeth flashing in his tanned face... "Oh... I see." Shards--what had her husband just said? She flushed, glad that he couldn't see her face. **Think of something...** "I'm sure it'll turn out fine, love." There.
"Thank you Larken," her husband murmured in her ear, nipping at it lightly. "You know, this doesn't mean that we have to stop trying for a baby..."
How many times had he told her that? Pasting on a smile, she turned her head to look at him in the dark. "Mmmm..." Pushing lingering thoughts of M'tone away, she reached up, fingers resting on the laces of his nightshirt. "I know."
