Toriat frowned at the brain solution he was making. He could have sworn he kept the heat low enough not to boil, but the water's top ripped. **Come to think of it, theres also a rumbling sound.**
Worried, Toriat ran outside, wondering what was causing the rumbling. He was outside turning, confused when the Senior Journeymen came out also.
"It's the hatching boy, you'll have to hurry to get yer robes."
Toriat ran past him back into the shed. "Good thing I brought this down a few days ago." Running into a store room he retrieved the white hatching robes and shimmed into them, then ran back out. **Hmm, slightly tinged from being down here, hope that doesn't affect my changes.**
As Toriat dashed for the hatching caverns he met up with more of the candidates arriving in a more sedate manner, although the nerves and anticipation was palatable in the air. As the candidates pulled together he caught sight of his sister. He jogged over to her and swept her up into a hug. "Best of luck Aryn."
"Thanks," Was the only response she could choke out until Toriat was already jogging back to the guys. "Afraid you'll attract the notice of a green if you stay over here brother?"
Still moving he turned retorting "don't want to ruin your chances dear sister." Then he was back with the other youths of the weyr waiting for their chance on impression.
All too soon eggs began to crack and all chaos broke lose. Toriat followed the advice he had learned, approaching the rocking eggs with thoughts of happiness and welcoming. But none of the dragonets would catch his eye. While one by one his classmates impressed. He was beginning to feel despair. Only now at the moment of impression did he seem to finally care so much.
And then they were almost all gone. Just the queen egg, barely beginning to crack. One of the last few eggs reveled a green at which point Toriat gave up. He turned to see his sister. "Oh shards" he said under his breath, the dragonet was going right towards her. On some level he knew this was for the best. She had been waiting longer, she hadn't the opportunities he did, but he was still crushed as he saw impression occur. He didn't even see the gold egg crack he was so intent on his sister. He tossed off a salute to her before he turned to face the very last eggs.
And then, it hatched green. He just, wasn't, he knew none of the green beauties were for him, he just knew. And all too soon the dragonet impressed. Toriat tasted sand in his mouth, as he realized he had fallen down. He picked himself off, both glad, and miserable that no one seemed to notice.
**Maybe, I'm simply not used to failing** he said to himself, hanging his head in disappointment.
