Most of Toriat's dinner companions had left, but he remained, having a little left to finish. He began looking around, to see if there were some other people he could sit with, but none of the conversations he could hear were interesting. He continued to pick at his food when a name caught in his ear.
He immediately began leaning back, realizing the girls behind him were talking about his sister.
Toriat picked up the conversation with "She is usually here now isn't she."
"I think I saw her a little earlier Morinine, maybe she got out of lessons early?"
"Ohh, maybe," the one presumably Morinine sighed. "I was hoping she'd tell us, about, you know who, the other night?"
**You know _who_, the other _night_!** Toriat thought, edging his chair a bit further backwards.
"Oh!" A third girl exclaimed. "Maybe thats where she is!"
"What do you mean Yaoa?" A fourth girl butted in.
"You haven't heard?" Morinine exclaimed, with an intake of breath.
**Obviously she hasn't, tell her** Toriat thought, annoyed, just wanting to here what these girls had to say.
"No, tell me, what haven't I heard," the fourth asked.
"Well," Yaoa explained in a lazy drawling tone. "You know those late night strolls shes been taking. She ran _into_ something a few nights ago."
**Late night? Which night?**
"More like some_one_" Morinine chimed in with cheerful cackle.
"Who?" the other two chorused.
**No, 'We came back in together' don't prove me that stupid?** Toriat thought, hoping he was wrong about where this was going. Although the thought of anyone in the weyr with his sister wasn't a pleasant concept, the one he was thinking, was far worse. **A nice guy, but with my sister?!?**
"Well Eilavia, you should know, you were the one to comment on it being a nice night."
"Oh! She ran into the runner did she," the second one replied, her voice full of comprehension.
**He... what did that boy** Toriat was now fuming, quivering in his seat. He began mumbling under his breath. "taking a walk, came back together, disappeared suddenly," repeating the words he had said the other night. **She was flushed when I finally tracked her down, I thought it was from the night chill.**
Meanwhile the conversation had continued.
"Well, what exactly happened?" The fourth asked.
"I don't know Aflihn," Morinine sighed. "Thats why I wish she was here to tell us."
"Well, I'm not so surprised Biri isn't exactly choosy," Eilavia replied. "I know Aryn fancied him, but I didn't suspect her the type to want casualness, she is fine holder stock you know," she ended in a mocking voice.
"Mmmm, no, she may be holder bred," Yaoa countered, "but if she wanted a monogamous relationship, she could have returned home you know. I think the runner is the one thats in for a surprise. Aryn likes to play the young and innocent, but I hardly think she is, anymore."
That was it, Toriat jumped out of his seat, slamming it into the table. He stalked off, fuming, not wanting to hear anything more about what others were saying about his sister.
"Whats _his_ problem," Morinine asked since several people noticed Toriat stalking off in a huff.
"Ohhhh," Eilavia giggled, drawing everyone over to whisper. "OOoooo," the four chorused, realized they had been overheard, and by whom.
"This ought to be innnteresting," Morinine said before they moved onto other gossip.
