What ever the specifics of this disease were, the outlook was grim for the beasts that caught it. By all accounts, the only thing that the Beastcraft Hall was able to tell them was that affected beasts should be slaughtered and the carcasses cremated, instruments to be boiled and then sterilised before reuse.

It was a mess, and a highly contagious one by the look of it, which was why K'sedel had invited Abrei and Lenala to discuss what precautions should be taken to prevent the spread of the infection as much as possible.

They arrived within moments of one another, Lenala looking unusually serious. The goldrider stepped aside and waved Abrei inside, causing the Weyrhealer to raise an eyebrow at her. "Weyrleader," Abrei said, taking one of the seats.

Lenala gave him a more friendly smile. "Hello, K'sedel."

"Ladies," he said by way of greeting. "I guess now is not the time to bother with the formalities, not when lives may be at stake."

"Do you have new information?" Abrei asked, not looking like she had any intention of bothering formalities.

"Not as yet, Tsaera sent Agate to the Healer Hall, but they haven't replied yet. The Beastcrafters have advised us to quarantine the sick, and to take precautions." He reached for the message that they had been sent, and passed it over to Abrei, "I'm sure you'll understand more of this than me," he said.

Abrei scanned it briefly. "Not much of it applies to people. I suppose I'll just have to continue to keep an eye on any unusual cases I find, though I think if it were as virulent as the plague, we would have noticed people falling sick by now." The Weyrhealer glanced briefly at Lenala before passing the note to her.

The Weyrwoman's Second accepted it a little helplessly. She could read the words well enough, but they made little sense. It was obvious from the dismissive way Abrei turned back to K'sedel that the she didn't expect Lenala to have anything of use to provide. It made Lenala feel a little foolish.

"I suppose one thing we can do is restrict unnecessary movement out of the Weyr. People might not be getting sick, but what if we carry it?" K'sedel was really thinking out loud, lips pursed in concentration. "What are your thoughts Lenala?"

Lenala hesitated, trying to ignore the impatient look Abrei was giving her.
"Well... I'm no beastcrafter... but doesn't this say that they think it can't be spread in cold weather? Perhaps we just need to stay away from climates like ours."

"And that would mean issuing restrictions to all, people and dragons alike.
We're not going to be able to prevent flights, but we can try to keep people here except for flying fall," said K'sedel. He then looked to Abrei, "What do you think?"

Abrei was studying Lenala with something bordering on surprise. "I think Lenala is correct. People aren't likely to get far enough to spread this without dragons... not in any sort of reasonable incubation period. Make sure the dragons don't go anywhere like Dolphin Cove or places that are warm... at least that will take care of the worries about spreading it."

"That might do it," said K'sedel. "Lenala, Could you perhaps ask Vilarth to speak to the dragons, People might think about disobeying our orders, but dragons would never dream of offending a gold in anyway by flouting an order."

"Of course." Lenala didn't hesitate in passing the orders on to Vilarth, knowing that at least _this_ she could do. She wasn't sure what made her feel worse--the fact that she had so little to contribute, or the fact that Abrei had looked at her as if she'd grown a second head when she _had_
contributed. Being a pretty idiot was so much easier.

Abrei frowned and looked at K'sedel. "I've sent a message to my father at the Healer Hall. He might be able to find something in the records to help."

"Good," K'sedel nodded approvingly. "I hope that they can give us good news."

Abrei gave him a wane smile. "I hope so as well. If there's nothing else...
I should get back to the infirmary."

"I can't think of anything for the moment," said K'sedel. "Anything to add Lenala?"

Lenala shook her head. "I don't think so. If there's anything you need me to do... to help out..."

"You'll be the first to know."
