Description: K'deren and J'darin run into each other again, with neither sure if
the outcome was good, or bad.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 9 of Turn 3
It was that time of the sevenday again when K'deren intended to have a family meal with his children, and Vonalie's as well. Having arranged with their fostermother that he would meet them in the dining cavern, his mind was not exactly on where he was going as he headed there.
J'darin nearly collided with the brownrider as he was exiting the dining cavern. Shards! How many times in one turn could he *run* into this
_particular_
brownrider?
"Looks like neither of us are paying attention, brownrider." J'darin said, by way of apology. Some apology!
"I think that perhaps it was me, sir." K'deren glanced over the Weyrleader.
J'darin focused on the brownrider for a moment. It was ironic to find that He would have preferred Donneth to Nyinth for a sire to the next group of
Weyrlings for his Weyr. This made his lips curls in a smile, no doubt
surprising K'deren. "I think it was both of us, K'deren." He nodded.
"How are things in Cyclone?" Not that he didn't know, but it seemed polite to ask.
"Things are going well," replied K'deren politley. "The Wingleader is settling in well, we've had good runs in our drills over the last sevenday or so."
"Well, good." He paused a moment. "Perhaps a brownrider as wingsecond is not so bad..." Eyes might pop if they heard the Weyrleader say that; no
tellinghow K'deren would react. "But _not_ a blue!" He muttered, half to
himself.
K'deren was mildly puzzled by that last remark, but left it unanswered. Perhaps it was not meant for him. "Your Wing? How are they going?"
"Filling up, I hope. Our last group of Weyrlings helped a bit, but they
are so vulnerable." He sighed softly, looking away from the brownrider. It was almost like he saw something else in the sky than anyone else. At that moment in time, he did not have the heart or energy to jibe at K'deren.
"I'm sure that when this next class graduates they'll be just as much a credit to the Weyr, and the next one also."
"I certainly hope so; our Weyrling staff is not .. traditional." His mouth
twisted just a bit. "I hope the Weyrlings they turn out are."
"I'm sure that Y'sani will do a good job."
"Its his choice of 'Seconds that worry me.." He frowned to himself, looking
distracted, and weighted down with the Weyr's burdens. "First brownriders
win gold Flights twice in a row, then a blue for a Wingsecond. What is happening to this Weyr?" He muttered, mostly to himself.
"Nothing more than is meant to happen with the flights," stated K'deren. "Ikoladith will choose as she wishes to."
J'darin started out of his thoughts and focused back on the brownrider next To him. "Aye, K'deren. I know. But her choices are costing me riders." He sighed softly. Anyone could count, and the number of eggs showed the truth of his statement. And the last Clutch as well, never mind lacking in
leadership - bronze dragons. He added that too, thinking perhaps he might
finally come to an understanding with this man. "There are also less bronzes...and we need bronzes."
"We need all colours sir," said the brownrider simply. "They all have their part to play in fall."
"I agree with you, K'deren, but at the moment I'm getting far more greens and blues than browns and bronzes, and that hinders flying Fall successfully sometimes. We could never replace the fast greens, or steady blues. But we have to have leaders too. Basically, I have ever color I need except bronze, and I could use a few more brownriders like you." His frown stayed, although he thought they were getting better. The Wings weren't stretched nearly so thin as right after the accident, six months later.
"Perhaps Ikoladith will surprise us all."
"Perhaps." He smiled faintly. A memory snapped. "Despite us both thinking
he
was settling in, M'kel has been making noises about transferring, K'deren... Could you come to my office tomorrow? We'll need to talk about who you think should replace him, if he does transfer."
"I can do that, and in the meantime I'll think about it."
J'darin nodded. He was _not_ going to make K'deren even a temporary
Wingleader if he could avoid it. But Faranth knew where he'd find another
bronzerider able to take over. M'kel had been a risk, and a bad one. He
sighed softly. "Yes, perhaps I'll choose more wisely this time. Good day, K'deren. I will see you tomorrow."
"Yes sir."
J'darin turned away from the brownrider, feeling as relieved as the
brownrider, no doubt, to be out of conversation range. But it had gone better, hadn't it?
