Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 13, day 28 of Turn 3
D'cal watched with amusement as his blue touched noses with the tiny brown dragonet. "Is he yours?" he asked the new dragonrider.
D'rue smiled faintly at the sight of his tiny dragonet craning his neck to look up at the grown blue. "Yes. He's Wisarth, and I'm Dai... D'rue."
It still sounded strange to him. He had been Daiirue for so long, he was having as many problems accustoming himself to the new name as he was to idea he had a dragon.
"I used to do the same thing," the bluerider smiled, picking up on the almost slip. "I'm D'cal. This is Aosorath." The rider held his hand out to the weyrling in greeting.
"Pleased to meet you." D'rue said formally, shaking D'cal's hand.
}:He's so big!:{ Wisarth resounded in his brain suddenly, sounding awed.
D'rue blinked, but resisted the urge to smile even wider. **Yes he is.
One day you'll be even bigger.**
Wisarth turned whirling eyes on his rider. }:Really?:{ "Yes, you will be." He promised Wisarth, then turned back to D'cal, feeling suddenly embarrassed. "Uh... Wisarth thinks Aosorath is really big." He said awkwardly, hoping the heat in his cheeks was from the sun.
"Sorry, I'm... not used to talking inside my head yet."
D'cal couldn't help but laugh. "He obviously hasn't seen too many blues then. Aosorath is actually quite small for his color."
}:But I'm huge compared to Wisarth,:{ the blue reminded his rider smugly.
**Your heart more than makes up for it,** his lifemate assured him, such love radiating between them it was almost tangible.
"He hasn't really met many dragons outside of the weyrling barracks."
D'rue admitted, scratching Wisarth's head fondly. The tiny brown crooned, his eyes closing in pleasure.
"He probably just doesn't remember," D'cal smiled. "Their powers of recollection aren't quite as good as ours. Especially at that age when everything is so new. At least that seemed to be the case of Aosorath."
"Yeah, I've noticed." D'rue admitted. "I guess all babies are like that.
But they grow fast." He said admiringly as Wisarth butted his hand.
"He's already the same size as one of the bronzes in his clutch."
"Then he might be a big one then," D'cal smiled. All that hide to scrub... Sometimes D'cal counted it a blessing that Aosorath was such a small blue. "He's a handsome little fellow."
"He is, isn't he." D'rue said proudly. "But I suppose all riders think that." He added, remembering his manners. "You Aosorath is a fine looking blue as well. And patient with this little rascal." He added as Wisarth darted at the larger blue, begging him to play with him. "Aosorath is just as curious about him. After all, it wasn't that long ago that he was that size," D'cal said with a fond smile. "He won't even be a Turn old until month five."
"Really?" D'rue was surprised. D'cal couldn't be much older than him, but he'd been told in class that that pairs could join the wings in their teens... He'd assumed from the D'cal's knots and Aosorath's size that he'd been fighting for turns. "I..." He trailed off, suddenly embarrassed. Shards, but how did you tell the experience of a rider again?
"Yes?" the bluerider encouraged, not quite sure what the weyrling wanted to say.
D'rue shook his head. "Nevermind. I'm sorry. I haven't been at the weyr long, and I can never quite remember everything they tell us in class.
It's... far more complicated than the stories made it out to be."
"Well, if you forget something, all you have to do is ask. I was new here too, you know. Not all that long ago." Not even a Turn yet, though it seemed like almost a lifetime.
"Yes, but it's still a lot to remember." D'rue shook his head. "I think they've been trying to cram more into my brain since I Impressed than they taught in my entire time at the hall. Or..." He smiled fondly at Wisarth's tiny figure beside Aosorath. He'd been smiling a lot more since he Impressed it seemed... "Or maybe it's just because I have two brains to teach now instead of one."
"It can be tiring, but worth it," D'cal nodded. As if he hadn't had enough questions of his own rattling around in his brain, getting Aosorath's too was quite a challenge. "You both do just fine."
}:What are you wearing?:{ Wisarth sounded in D'rue's brain, and he had to look over at his brown before he realized he was asking Aosorath about his riding straps. He shook his head. "How long does it take to get used to having that extra voice in you'r head?" D'rue questioned.
"It's nothing like my flit."
}:The little one?:{ Wisarth asked eagerly, craning his head around to look for Vree, eyes whirling. D'rue smiled. **No, he's not here.**
"You know, I'm not sure," the bluerider said thoughtfully. "Just one day I realized that it didn't used to be this way. You get used to it so gradually and really pretty easily that you hardly notice when its not distracting anymore."
}:Am I distracting?:{ Wisarth asked, wings drooping.
**No, Wisarth.** D'rue soothed automatically, wondering how the dragonet had picked up on D'cal's comment. He still wasn't sure how this worked... "I guess you're right." He admitted. "It was really startling the first few times, but it's not so bad now."
"Soon you won't even remember what it was like having only one thought in your head." Not to mention the name or the life you were born into. It was almost like from the moment their Hatchlings were born, their riders were born with them. D'rue raised an eyebrow. "I don't know about _that_." He said skeptically.
After all, he'd lived nearly twenty turns without Wisarth. "Not that's I give Wisarth up for a moment." He added. "It's just such an enormous responsibility. To ride a dragon... to fight Thread..." He trailed off, watching his little brown coo at some flits overhead.
"You wouldn't have been picked if you weren't right for it," D'cal reminded him. It was drummed into them from the moment that they Impressed that the dragons knew best. "That's what they keep telling me." He admitted with a sigh. "But they also say they don't know how it works. Wisarth doesn't understand when I asked why he chose me. He just says 'I chose you.'"
The bluerider shrugged. "Well, its not as if we can point to what makes us fall in love with our dragons in an instant either. It just... is."
"Yeah. It just is." D'rue sighed, then smiled as Wisarth squealed in delight as Vree popped in from /between/.
