Choosing to Help

Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 5 of Turn 4

Dust was starting to accumulate on the trunk he'd just unburied, and F'melar sneezed. He'd been directed to this storeroom when he'd inquired about extra tapestries for his weyr. They'd looked at him funny for a moment, but to his relief hadn't argued. His healer at Rising Moons had suggested coating the walls of his weyr in tapestries and rugs to cut down on the echoes, and he'd discovered to his surprise it worked well, even if the effect was a bit gaudy. He sneezed again, his eyes watering.

"Are you okay?" asked Hanni studying the man for a moment. The sneeze was rather... violent.

Faranth! He hadn't noticed she was in here. Vainly he mopped at his eyes, trying to wave away the dust. "Yes." He said hoarsely, then cleared his throat. "It's just dusty."

"Are you sure?" she asked. "It doesn't sound it."

"I'm sure." He said gruffly, waving some more dust out of his face.
"Someone needs to fire the drudge who cleans in here." After a moment's pause to be certain that he wasn't going to sneeze again, flipped open the lid. Ah Ha! Old tapestries, in the more geometric designs he favored, although he should see if there were a few scenes that Sakime would like.

"That's nice," said Hanni from over his shoulder. "The colour has lasted really well, not faded at all."

He lifted the top tapestry carefully out of the trunk, eyeing it critically. It was a smaller one, meant for an alcove or corner. "It has."
He agreed. "But the threads are wearing. See here, where it mounts?
Ripped."

"That's not good at all," she said after studying it for a moment. "I don't know if the weavers would be able to fix that for you or not. It looks a little tricky."

He shook his head. "I don't think I want it anyway. I'm looking for something bigger." He started to set it aside, then hesitated. "Unless you want it?" He offered.

"I don't think I have a place to hang that one, besides I really want a rug for by my bed," she said with a laugh.

"Rugs..." He pursed his lips as he thought for a moment. "I think they said there were some a little farther back. I need a few too, but for the floor." He smiled faintly.

"The floor by my bed gets cold," explained Hanni. "Something light and pretty. That's what I need."

His smile grew. "Light and pretty. I can see that. What colors would you like?"

"Pale blue," she said.

"Blue to match your eyes. Just one color though? Nothing else?" He kept his smile light to show that he was teasing her.

"It needs to be very simple, to go with the rest of the decor, of course to judge that properly, you'd need to see it."

"I'm sure I would." He agreed cautiously, He wasn't sure if that was an invitation or not. Not that he had any complaints if it was... but he didn't want to get the wrong message.

"And I'm sure you'd be such a good judge of what you would see in my weyr."

"Maybe, maybe not." He answered with a grin. "You haven't seen my decor to know. I might have horrible taste."

"There's only one way for you to find out."

And if that wasn't an invitation, he had no right to be a in a weyr. "I think I'd like to see that." He agreed, his grin getting wider. Shards, but it had been a while since he let himself indulge... "Do you want to show me it now, or wait until we find something for your floor...?"

"Perhaps we can find something for the floor, and you can help me, find the right place to put things."

"I think I'd like that." He chuckled. "And you can tell me how terrible my taste is in wall hangings..." He reached out for her hand, intending to pull her down beside him in front of the trunk. "I think there might be a rug or two in here... so we could get started...?"

"Definitely," she said as he took her hand. "I'm sure we can really 'help' each other."

"I think we'll need all the 'help' we can get, don't you?" He grinned as he pulled her down beside him. He was really going to enjoy this.

"I'll help you," she grinned up at him. "Just as you can help me."
