Wirril smiled up at her weyrmate as Ylisahn arrived in their rooms.
"Busy again?"

The older woman nodded. "My job and part of Mayla's; though restdays are easier."

"Which is why you're home so much earlier," Wirril teased as she put her tatting aside in its own protective linen bag. "Mid-afternoon? That's not too bad these days."

"I am sorry." Ylisahn bent down and kissed Wirril briefly before settling on the armchair opposite and sighing with pleasure. "Now it's a restday."

Wirril moved her feet over on the footstool that stood equidistant between the two chairs and nodded at the other woman. "Put your feet up and relax."

"I will. I deserve it after this sevenday."

"Some of the stress was your own fault," Wirril said, her hands unconsciously bringing the tatting out of its bag again. She had been making lace of some kind or other all her life and she became very aware of the emptiness of her hands when her work was put aside. It was easier to talk when her hands were busy and certainly after all this time Ylisahn didn't regard her busy hands as a lack of interest in their conversation. "Thinking Ravere and Rilisa were in love."

"Oh, that." Ylisahn could smile about it now, after four days, but at the time she had dreaded such an announcement from their children. "I really thought my heart was going to have a seizure when Ravere got all formal and made up fill our glasses for a toast." For a moment she had thought she wouldn't be able to even pretend that she was happy until she had enough time to get used to the idea and pretence became reality.
"Did I look like death?"

"Pretty close. Rilisa said later she thought you must be working to hard …" Wirril was already laughing before she managed to finish her teasing, "… that you had forgotten …" even her hands had to pause in their work while she laughed, "… it was the anniversary of our weyrmating."

"Sweet brats, the pair of them." Ylisahn's grumble was half-hearted because their children were wonderful. Friends to each other them as well as a son and a daughter any parents could be proud of. "Even if they aged me ten Turns over that."

"Do you really think they would ever consider each other that way? As lovers? Weyrmates?"

Ylisahn was silent for a long moment, turning thoughts and memories over in her mind. "No. They are always touching; hugging, kissing –"

"Which is how we raised them. To be affectionate." Wirril's own family had been far more tactile than Ylisahn's which was weyrbred and peopled with half-siblings and foster siblings who were spread over a wide age range. That was possibly why she didn't have the same qualms that had affected her weyrmate.

"Yes." Ylisahn nodded. "So, I don't think their relationship will change. They see each other so completely as siblings. Twins, perhaps.
I think it did me good to think about it, though. Gave me a chance to see that it's me who is conscious their lack of blood relationship – not them."

"Blood relationships don't always make families," Wirril pointed out gently.

"Ohh, listen to you, holdbred girl," Ylisahn teased, smiling across at the woman she had long ago fallen in love with. "You think I don't know that?"

Wirril matched her weyrmate's sunny smile. "Apparently you needed reminding."
