"Did you get a chance to peek at the first flights today, K'deren?"
Ylisahn asked as she paused at the table to refill some empty klah mugs for the occupants. It wasn't exactly her job but there were a lot of people still in the cavern and and extra pair of hands was always welcome. She had done table service in her past and if being an assistant to the Headwoman had made such a task unlikely for her, she hadn't forgotten how the job was done.
"I missed them I'm afraid. Too much hidework to get done." The brownrider grimaced at the thought of returning to it.
"As a dragonrider? Too much hidework? You should try being the Headwoman. Since Mayla's been ill the amount of hidework we're having to divide between the assistants has been growing, I'm sure of it."
"Ever noticed that as fast as you get through one pile, the remaining ones grow? It's like they multiply and breed when you aren't watching them."
"That explains it, then. We've been leaving them unattended in Mayla's office."
"I can just see them now, a hide on wing formations, meeting up with one of hers on levels of herbs in the kitchens," he said jokingly.
Ylisahn laughed, delighted with the idea. "Three tarragon leaves to lead, followed by eight pinches of dried basil in a line to windward?
That sort of result?"
"Something like that," K'deren laughed as well.
"When Mayla comes back I shall tell her she has to keep her hidework away from rider stuff. It's just getting all jumbled despite our best efforts to keep things going during her illness."
"Sadly mine stays the same. We need a wingleader soon."
"I'm sure you'll get one. It might even be you," she teased lightly.
"J'darin's too traditional, for that." Although K'deren did like the idea, and it'd be one up on his bronzerider brother.
"In that case you can look forward to a bronzerider to coming along soon who will just _live_ for the hidework that's weighing you down. Just think how nice it will be to hand it all over to him."
"Oh, it'll be well worth it, when it happens."
Ylisahn responded to a wave for more klah further down the table and then drifted back to the wingsecond. "But when Mayla comes back to work she'll still be recovering, so we won't be able to be quite as ...
enthusiastic ... about returning her work to her."
"You never know," joked K'deren. "Or of course, there is always the possibility that she may decide not to return."
"As long as it's a decision she makes and isn't made because her illness is worse than we've been told. Headwomen are supposed to grow old in the job."
"And not grow old because of it."
"I never thought of that ..." Ylisahn said, her eyes widening in mock surprise. "Perhaps the old Headwoman, the one before Mayla, was only in her third decade and she just _looked_ like she was in her seventh!"
"Maybe that just goes with the job. After all, who else would terrorise young weryrbrats and candidates?"
"And dragonriders who don't behave themselves around the dining cavern,"
she agreed, making an effort to look stern before returning to her usual smile. "No, I don't think I'm cut out for that stuff."
"You never know though, I mean I never thought I'd be a rider until Donneth was stood before me asking for food."
"Must have been a wonderful surprise. I don't think becoming Headwoman compares - and especially not in this case where we're just waiting for Mayla to get well again." She patted the bowl of the klah pot and made a face. "I'm gossiping while this gets cold."
"But you can afford a little time," he grinned at her. "As can I before those hides take over our lives."
"I've taken a little time," she pointed out, "talking to you. Take care to separate those hides at night so they can't breed, K'deren."
"So long as you remember to do the same."
