Naps

Writers: Bree, Cali

Characters: B'vin, Dyaera
Description: B'vin and Dyaera talk in the infirmary.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 7, day 10 of Turn 3

Laying in this bed for days now had given B'vin a new perspective on life. That new perspective, epiphany even, was this: Naps are not all they're cracked up to be. He desperately wanted out of this bed, even though he knew he couldn't stand, not with the way his leg was throbbing, but he still wanted up and about. To think of all the days B'vin had wasted _napping_ in his weyr when he could have been out and about, up in the air flying on Serenth anywhere he chose, doing anything he wanted... what a waste. Today was turning into an equally boring day, Serenth had been sleeping all morning, and B'vin not wanting to wake her had absolutely nobody to talk to. He noticed Dyaera awake on her bed and he wondered how she was taking her confinement. If it had been almost anyone else he would have tried to strike up a conversation out of sheer boredom, but he wasn't _that_ desperate!

Dyaera, on the other hand, was beyond desperate. She caught B'vin's eye when he glanced at her again. "This is really boring."

"Yes, it is." was all he could think to say. The last time he had talked to Dyaera, she had behaved like a vapid tunnel snake and they had argued so fiercely she had run off in tears. It wasn't, to be sure, one of his finer moments, but she had deserved it... especially after the comments she had made about him not being a real man!

Dyaera grimaced. "How long are you here for?"

"I don't know, they said it was too soon to tell, they want to wait and see how my leg heals." He shifted uncomfortably before adding, "And you?" "I don't know either..." Dyaera sighed, shifting slightly. "I can barely move still, so I suppose a long time."

B'vin just stared at the ceiling unable to think of anything to say to her. He didn't think they had anything in common, and he wasn't keen on broaching subjects to which they would probably disagree on. He was just so completely bored! Wracking his brain for something safe to talk about, he finally tried to continue, "I uh, I saw you get scored. Or at least I'm pretty sure it was you. You uh, couldn't have dodged it, it was a nasty tangle."

Dyaera shuddered. "I don't even remember it, really... it hurt so much.
It hurt everywhere. I don't remember anything but pain... and waking up here a few days later."

"You're lucky then, I remember too much." B'vin said as he recalled the scene in the Weyrbowl as he brought his injured Serenth in for her landing.

"I'm sorry..." The look in Dyaera's eyes was surprisingly soft. "I know I'm lucky. Someone said I was one of the first ones 'scored... I didn't see anyone else get hurt. Or get killed..."

"The bowl was..." he felt his throat tighten and knew that he would _not_ let anyone, especially Dyaera, see him look weak. Pushing down any feeling he continued, his voice now hollow. "I'm tired, I'm going to take a nap." He closed his eyes before she could respond, but continued to push away any thought of that horrendous day in case she was watching him. Her voice came anyway, soft and hesitant. "I'm sorry, B'vin."
