When M'galec entered Abrei's office, she had his transfer file spread out on her desk and an uncharacteristically large smile on her face. "Have a seat, bronzerider... I was just looking over the notes from the Weyrhealer you worked with before, and I am very impressed."
He gave her an indulgent smile. "Ah, excuse me. I'm sorry, but I've already had a physical."
One eyebrow shot up, her smile shifting abruptly to the dangerous one that usually came shortly before an outburst. "I'm so glad to hear it, because I have far better things to do than perform one."
M'galec shifted uneasily in his seat. "Forgive me, but I was to report in to the _Weyrhealer_ - Master Abrei."
It wasn't the first time someone had assumed she couldn't possibly be the Weyrhealer, but the fact that Abrei had been _so_ looking forward to meeting the healer whose skills had been so praised made her annoyance all the sharper. "Then let me introduce you to her." Abrei held out her hand, that smile still fixed on her face. "I'm Master Abrei, the Weyrhealer of River Bluff Weyr, and I should warn you that my patience for being condescended to is non-existent."
"Jounrneyman M'galec, rider of bronze Dwarkanath," he said as he took her hand warily. "Forgive me, Master Abrei, I meant no condescension. But you do _seem_ a bit young to be Weyrhealer. I'm used to a Weyrhealer who is old enough to be my father, afterall." The bronzerider cocked his head to the side as he looked at her young face. "You must be brilliant."
"I like to think so," Abrei replied, withdrawing her hand and settling back in her chair. "You're no mental halfwit yourself, from what your previous Weyrhealer had to say. And I'm very pleased to see I'll have someone else with a skill for post-Threadfall trauma surgery." The bronzerider smiled as he settled back in his chair. He liked people who knew their worth and didn't dance around the subject. "It's unfortunate such a skill is necessary. But, yes, that is my specialty."
"Good. There aren't nearly enough people who I can count on with the severe injuries, and I can't be everywhere at once, much as I like to try." Abrei smiled and looked back down at the file she'd been reviewing. "Master Portalin thought very highly of your abilities, which is saying something."
Abrei glanced up at him with an amused look in her eyes. "I'm sure you know better than I do how hard he makes people work for a compliment." "Yes," he said as his lips curled into a smile. "And I can bet you can guess how Master Portalin reacted to the news that I was transferring.
Although he had nothing but praise for you. Especially after the tragedy at Dolphin Cove."
Abrei accepted the compliment with a smile, pleased to know that the grizzled old Master Healer had gotten past his initial concern that River Bluff's new Weyrhealer was out of her depth. "Well, hopefully you'll find nothing so demanding here, though there are always injuries that need caring for. I'd like you to come in at some point before the next Threadfall so that I can assign a junior journeyman and a few apprentices to work with you during the Fall. Having assistants who know you tends to make things run a bit more smoothly."
The bronzerider nodded. "Yes, I would appreciate that. I work pretty fast, so I will need assistants that can keep up with me. I can be very demanding when the heat is on." "My apprentices are used to demanding," Abrei replied dryly. "Though I'm fairly sure that's not what they call it behind my back. I don't have Master Portalin's intimidating scowl and grey hair, so I have to find other ways of intimidating my healers."
M'galec smiled. "I hope I will never give you cause to be intimidating."
"So do I," Abrei replied, smiling in return. "The one thing you need to know about me, M'galec, is that I take this job very, very seriously. I don't tolerate foolishness. I don't care what your rank is outside of the infirmary... when you are in here, I am in charge." The bronzerider nodded. "Not to worry, Master Abrei. I always believed that an infirmary is no place for foolishness. Too much is at stake for petty pride. You are the Weyrhealer, and I will follow your lead."
"Then I think we'll get along just fine, M'galec." Abrei extended her hand again, this time with a smile that really was warm. "Welcome to my infirmary, bronzerider."
