Corofel

Corofel

Corofel tongue stuck out between his lips when he concentrated and cast the fishing line. The hook landed middle of a pie left to cool in kitchen counter. He glanced once again around the corner if anybody had spotted him "fishing". He started to pull the line in, and the pie slid neatly along the table. It had reached the edge when he realized the weak spot on his clever plan. The pie was going to crash to the floor, and the kitchen staff would hear the nose. "Bugrit," he swore, disappointed.

"Who left that so close. . ." Vanea strode through the kitchen but stopped mid-sentence, peering intently at the pie. Reaching across the counter, she grabbed the line above the hook - now pulling the top crust awry - and yanked on it.

"O-ou" Corofel groaned when he noticed that his fish hook had been spotted.

The headwoman followed the sound quickly, grabbing the boy by his arm.
"I knew that line didn't get there without help, but I'd not have expected you to be acting like a common urchin."

"Eerhh," was only thing the boy got out of his mouth.

She bent toward him slightly so that her face was on the same level as his. "And I wonder what your father will have to say about this?"

"Ymh..." Corofel knew exactly what his dad would say: "Don't get caught."

"Not able to talk?" Vanea asked him. "Let's pay a visit to your father and see if you can tell him about it."

"Yes, M'am," Corofel sighed.

She grabbed the damaged pie with her free hand and nodded toward the exit. "Start walking."

Corofel obeyed the headwoman. It didn't take them long to reach the Lord holder's office. Corowal was just escorting a holder out when he spotted the pair approaching. "Well, well, what do we have here?" he asked.

"Your son has been fishing," Vanea told him. "Indoors."

"Really? And what he was trying to catch?" Corowal asked. He didn't know yet if he should be amused or angry.

"Tell him," the headwoman instructed the boy.

"Pies. I thought I could pull some cooling pies to me without anybody seeing it," Corofel said sullenly.

"Obviously didn't work," Corowal remarked. He had to fight to keep his face neutral and not to burst out in laugh.

She eyed the Lord Holder suspiciously. "No, it didn't work - I caught him at it, fortunately before he had made a mess of the kitchen floor."

Corowal made a disapproving sound and his eyes narrowed. "And aren't you supposed to be on harper class just now?" he asked. Stealing pies might amuse him, skipping classes didn't. The boy squirrmed under his father's gaze. "Your a lord's heir now, you can't run around like ordinary ruffian anymore."

"And this pie is ruined," the Headwoman told them. "Besides the damage to the top of it, the hook appears to be dirty and slightly rusted. This pie is inedible."

Corowal racked his brains to find a suitable punishment. "All right, no desserts or other sweets for a sevenday," he said to to Corofel.

"Aw, dad!"

"Don't you 'aw' there. Take your punishment like man. Vanea, would you please make sure that whole staff knows that Corofel won't be served any dessert or anything resembling delicacies for the next seven days?"

"That's fair enough," was her reply. "Of course, sometimes the consequences of actions go beyond a single person." She held up the pie.
"This was meant for your family's table. Tonight we'll be short one pie because of it."

"I'm sorry, " Corofel said with miserable voice.

Vanea shrugged. "Think about how you'll apologize to those who will do without because of it - the other members of your family."

"You and I are going to have a serious private chat," Corowal said to his son. Then he looked at the headwoman. "Thank you, Vanea, he won't be bothering you or raiding kitchens any more."

She nodded to him. "Thank you, Lord Corowal. And now I'll return to the kitchens to check on the remaining pies." She placed the damaged one on the desk before turning and leaving the office.
