Striking Similarities

Writers: Avery, Eimi
Date Posted: 12th October 2007

Characters: Eridhiya, M'galec
Description: Eridhiya introduces himself to M'galec and they discover striking similarities.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 6 of Turn 4

Eridhiya thought that it was time to make the rounds and introduce herself to the people she imagined she would be working with fairly often. She'd gotten a list of names and where their offices were, and was methodically working her way through them. **Avesith, can you-**

But the green knew what she was doing by now. }:Dwarkanath,:{ she said, }:Is your rider free? Mine wishes to speak with yours.:{ Eri smiled, glad that Avesith was giving them some warning. Within a few moments she was outside the door, waiting for either his invitation or Avesith's confirmation he was free.

M'galec nearly jumped up to greet her. Finally, an _adult_ to talk to!
"Please, Master Eridhiya, come in," he smiled, holding the door open for her.

"Weyrlingmaster M'galec." she greeted, smiling at him. She hadn't expected anyone she was visiting to really know her yet, as she'd only arrived yesterday. "I do hope I'm not interrupting anything pressing?"

"Nothing that cannot wait," he assured her. "Please, have a seat." The bronzerider pulled out a chair for her and indicated that she should sit.

Now the dragonhealer was impressed. He had held the door and pulled out the chair- that was rare enough. She appreciated it. "Thank you very much." she replied. "I wished to introduce myself to you, since I imagine we'll be seeing a fair bit of each other."

"I certainly hope so," M'galec smiled as he walked over to the cupboard in the corner. "It is rare that I have a chance to speak with a fellow dragonrider who takes their craft so seriously. Klah? Wine? I am sure I could ask the kitchens for some juice if you would prefer."

She pondered it. Was it too early for wine? Not for a single glass, she thought- she didn't expect any cases today, since she was still settling into her office. "A glass of red, if you have any."

"I do," he nodded, pulling out a bottle and an opener. M'galec had distinguished guests so rarely, so he was pleased to finally open a bottle. "Tell me how you came to River Bluff then, Master Eridhiya."

"Dolphin Cove has had some very interesting professional challenges."
she said, knowing he would know of what she meant. "Yet the Weyrdragonhealer position here opened, and I've been there and Thayan Peak my entire life as a rider. A change of scenery was welcomed."

"You were born there, were you?" he asked, pressing a glass of blood-red wine into her hand.

She took it and took a sip before replying, tasting it properly and them smiling in approval. "This is excellent." she commented. "No, actually.
I was born to Peridot Plains Hold. Emerald Falls territory." she elaborated. "And yourself?"

"Mountain View Hold in Vista View territory," he said with a wave, knowing she probably would have never heard of it. "I then moved to Rising Moons Weyr when it was opened, and finally transfered here when the Weyrlingmaster Second position opened up."

"Did you Impress early in life, or later on?"

"I was Impressed at an average age, I would say. Fifteen. Just before I could finish my junior apprentice knots." A fact which he was sure had contributed to his not yet being Master. Though he would never change Dwarkanath for a new set of knots.

"There was time after Impression, at least." The current weyrlings would never get that luxury. "Have you a specialty?"

Not nearly enough time for M'galec's taste. "I am a surgeon."

She was impressed by this man. Exceptionally polite and clearly intelligent- a good pairing. "A difficult part of the craft to learn."

He shrugged modestly, though he certainly agreed. "I seem to be suited to it. I work best under pressure."

"It is quite stimulating." While she hated the casualties and the severity of the injures, it was why she always felt a certain adrenaline rush when she was tending Threadfall injuries. "I would argue our crafts are the hardest, though I suppose any other would say the same of theirs."

"True. But none other hold's life in their hands." A fact of which M'galec was most proud.

"Precisely." Yes, the Weyrlingmaster's Second was a most agreeable man.

Outside, Avesith rumbled. }:I like Dwarkanath.:{
**You like any bronze.** the greenrider thought with a laugh. "So, as one professional to another, do you think there's anything I should know? About people, dragons- places where secret supplies are stashed..." she joked.

"Well, I shall let you form opinions of people as you will," the bronzerider said as he set his glass down. "But I do have to say that our Weyrwoman is a most capable leader, but I have my doubts about the rest of the so called leadership here. That is all I will say on that score. Though they seem to leave crafters to their business, which is most appreciated."

The Weyrwoman was capable. Eri had certainly gained that impression. The Weyrleader had seemed a good man too- she wondered if there was a history behind that. "I imagine they understand that we do know best when it comes to our craft."

"Usually, though they have butted in before where they did not belong and completely made a mess of a poor woman's psyche," M'galec sighed, remembering that embarrassing incident with Lenala, "But as I said, I will leave you to form your own opinion of people."

Eridhiya frowned. "Perhaps they did not understand the situation?" She wondered who the woman mentioned was and what the leadership had done.
Very interesting.

"I tried to explain it as clearly as I possibly could, but they seemed to think they knew best." And look where that had gotten them? No good came of it, for sure! "Though I would certainly not have presumed to question the Weyrwoman's opinion in her own craft, but she makes mistakes and listens to bad advice from time to time. Did you know she is a Master crafter herself?"

This definitely sounded interesting, but she didn't think she was going to learn it all soon. "Is she really? That would explain the aura of confidence around her."

"It would," M'galec nodded. "I have always had a theory that the best leaders are crafters for that very reason. Of course, K'sedel too was a crafter, but he was only a journeyman farmer. As I said, it is only a theory of mine and certainly not full-proof."

"But you would never want the Weyrleader position." He seemed to take too much pride in his craft for that- that would ruin it forever.

"Oh certainly not. I would not even accept the Weyrling Master position when it was offered to me. You see," he leaned a little closer, sensing she could understand him completely. "I do not mean to sound arrogant.
I believe a man ought to know what he is worth and not be afraid to admit it. I am much too valuable a surgeon to be wasted in Threadfall.
I save more lives on the ground than I ever could in the air. Our job, yours and mine, is _vital_ to the working of this Weyr. Without us there would be no riders left to fight the Thread. We are needed where we are. I could not be selfish and dream of a position of glory and heroism. Not when there are young men and women on tables dying and I can save them. I am sure it is the same for you."

"Your passion shows me the truth." she said. "I would argue that you _have_ a position of glory and heroism. Without you, I am sure some riders would not be alive. That should be glory enough in itself. I might have been a Wingthird, but I would rather be a dragonhealer and ensure that the wingthirds keep flying."

"I agree whole heartedly, Master Eridhiya," M'galec nodded emphatically.
He leaned back, his smile full of wonder at the amazing woman who had walked through his door. "I have to say, I am most pleased you have come to River Bluff. It is so nice to have someone with whom I can hold an intelligent conversation."

"I am pleased to find such intelligent and courteous company." Eri replied. "And please...Eri would be fine, unless you do not prefer using nicknames."

"I will call you whatever you wish to be called. Eri it is." He picked up his glass once more and reached out to clink it against hers.
"To new friends then."

"To friends." Properly educated ones who still had the manners of a Holder, that was.
