Toriat was taking his time finishing up dinner. It had been a rather pleasant evening spending time with some of the new Tanners brought in for the new candidacy. There hadn't been a hatching since the one he had initially been searched for almost a turn ago. The new comers saw the glamor of the weyr, one he had never felt himself. He wouldn't take advantage... the behavior of the weyr still hadn't completely sunk in. That didn't stop him from the occasional tumble but he never liked how quick those nights were over. He rarely went out of his way to return to someone he'd been with before, unless _they_ approached him.
"Can you take me on a tour... a private tour Toriat?" one of the girls said batting her lashes coquettishly.
"I'm sorry Feyna, not tonight, I have to get an early start tomorrow,"
he responded, placing a hand on her shoulder. "But maybe, if you don't mind waiting, another night?" He had a feeling she wasn't as worldly as she was pretending, and didn't want to be her first. He was already trying to think of someone more willing and suitable to potentially introduce her too.
"Are you sure Toriat...?" she whined a bit, with a hopeful look.
"What do you have to get up early for, not someone else I hope?"
"Give him a break Feyna", Maton smirked, "Hes this way with everyone.
Give him a few seven day, he'll warm up."
Toriat didn't even bother giving Maton the glare he deserved. "I honestly need to get an early start tomorrow Feyna... another time."
Feyna looked at one, then the other, before walking off in a huff.
"Say goodnight to Rima for me!" Maton yelled back with wave, laughing.
When she was well out of earshot, he continued. "I don't know how you keep them coming to you when you confuse so many Toriat."
"Being particular is not a crime at the Weyr Maton, and I'd rather let Feyna conduct her own explorations." Toriat took a long sip, finishing off his drink.
"Well, since you're heading off early, you wouldn't mind if I pursue my own explorations then, right?" Maton's eyes flew up as someone hesitated at the entrance to the dining caverns. "Maybe even her?
Not my usual type, but she seems familiar...who is she?"
Toriat turned to see who his friend was looking at. Teseada. His breath was stuck in his throat for a moment. He had tried flirting with her for a bit. She was so stubborn, open, with that smile... a breath of fresh air compared to the complications of the Weyr. But almost a turn ago she had impressed... the golden Onnyth. He had watched from afar as she had grown, into confidence with Onnyth, and into the position she would fill. Toriat knew what he was, coming to the Weyr he learned not to be ashamed, but he could never be anything to her. I hadn't helped he had seen one of the bronze riders being very familiar with her... so he stayed away.
"Toriat...? Toriat... hello you go /between/ there?" Maton asked, waving a hand in front of Toriat's face.
"No, sorry Maton," Toriat said shaking his head. "Thats a goldrider, and shes out of your league, Maton."
Maton's eyes twinkled. "No ones out of your league at the Weyr Toriat, when will you learn that?"
"No, Maton, wait!" Toriat said reaching out, but his friend had already sprinted away.
