"No, Maton, wait!" Toriat said reaching out, but his friend had already sprinted away. He looked around frantically, hopping he was going somewhere else... anywhere else. **You really can be a wherry's arse sometimes Maton** Toriat thought, clenching his fists. He sunk his head down, covering his eyes, at first not wanting to watch.
Then... alternating to uncovering and popping his head up to look.
People started to give him weird looks, wondering first if they were missing something... then deciding... they weren't. **You're making a bigger deal out of this then you should... what is the matter Toriat?!** has asked himself.
~*~
"Hello, excuse me?" Maton said as he got closer to Teseada... slowing down into more of a swagger. "Could I by chance convince you to stay?
This cavern already seems a little dimmer without your presence."
Maton always laid it on thick with people he wasn't sure about...
better to find out if they were up for some flirtation sooner then later.
The goldrider had learnt something since she impressed. She slowly looked the young man up and down, before calmly replying. "Perhaps you should find a seat closer to the glow baskets then, if things seem dim."
"_That_ is a great idea!" Maton said, continuing to push, "You're a smart one, I knew you were a smart one. You've got that just so, confident look to you." He smiled toothily, hoping his flattery was working. "I have just the spot in the corner there, would you like to join me?"
~*~
Toriat popped his head up and saw they _were_ talking. Oh no, talking! And motioning. **Where are you pointing to Maton... not over here??!?!** It was no where near Toriat, however in he was already acting quite paranoid.
~*~
Was it her, or the knots on her shoulder she thought. "Over there? Where there are fewer glows than here?"
"Nooooo," Maton responded, scissoring his hands. "Trust me, there are more over there... seee" he pointed again, "they need light for the cards at that table."
"Then perhaps you should join their game, seeing as you seem so interested in it, I'm sure that they would make space for you," suggested Teseada sweetly. He was nice, but not really what she was looking for. If anything tonight, she just wanted to chat to friends, not have candidates who were clearly new to the Weyr try to drag her into things she didn't want.
"No," Maton replied sullenly. "I guess I've lost interest." His gaze rested on Toriat for more then a moment. **Was this what you meant by out of reach?** Maton suddenly became very annoyed. Toriat was turning down offers while Maton had to actually work.
~*~
**What, why are you looking over here?** Toriat wondered, as he caught Maton's eyes. **Whats going on?!?! What are you talking about? Why would you even talk with him?**
~*~
Maton couldn't help but notice the look of worry on Toriat's face.
**Whats got him so upset?** He wondered, getting even _more_ annoyed with his friend. If only he could at least make it _look_ like he hadn't failed... He faced Teseada again, and drew close. "Maybe it will return, at a better time?"
"Maybe it will," she replied. And most likely not, she thought.
Maton had to try hard not to glare **This ones cold** he thought.
"And when that better time comes, you can find me at the Tannery."
Maton replied pulling back. "Good evening goldrider," he said giving a nod of respect, hesitating a moment, in case she had anything else to say.
"Good evening, candidate."
Maton then turned and stalked away, without a backwards glance.
Determined to not return at this early candlemark, he looked for company elsewhere.
~*~
**Well, Maton left by himself.** Toriat thought, with a guilty relief.
**But still they were awfully close for a moment...** shaking his head, he simply tried to put the incident out of his mind. He stood up looking around for some familiar faces, deciding he needed another drink before ending the night after all.
