"Just because you won three of the last four chess matches, it doesn't mean you are a better player." B'vin said to a grinning D'cal, "I am on some pretty strong painkillers you know."

"Well, maybe I should take a few painkillers just to give you a fighting chance next time," D'cal laughed.

"I tell you what, the next time they come by with that nasty fellis juice, I'll cry out in pain to distract her, and you can switch cups."
B'vin was half serious as he hated that juice with a passion, but he knew he would be hurting without it. "Or maybe I should just break something and get my own dosage," D'cal replied, his voice laced with sarcasm but his eyes smiling.

"Great idea!" B'vin retorted, "Then you can have the bed next to me and we can play chess all day long!"

"My bed," a sleepy voice said grumpily from behind D'cal. "S'not big enough for him."

"I actually meant the bed on the _other_ side of me." B'vin said, trying to keep the annoyance out of his voice. He knew that D'cal was only ever around because of Dyaera, and that if he wanted to keep his chess partner he would have to be civil to her. "Perhaps we should move it in right between you too," D'cal said with an unconcerned chuckle. He was not aware of the history between the two and just joined into what he perceived as friendly banter. He walked over to Dyaera's bed and laid a hand on her unbandaged shoulder. "How are you there? Do you need me to get anything for you?"

"Something to drink?" she asked, her voice still a little groggy. "I'm always so thirsty when they drug me..."

"Of course," D'cal said as he walked over the the stand by her bed. Picking up the pitcher that was always left there for just such a purpose, he turned to the other greenrider. "A glass of water for you too, B'vin?"

"Yeah, thanks." B'vin answered a bit surprised that D'cal would pay any attention to him now that he had his Dyaera awake. B'vin went to grab for his cup on the table, but couldn't quite reach without using his leg to stretch; and he had learned in the last few days that was a big mistake.

"Just a moment, B'vin. Let me get that for you," D'cal said as he handed Dyaera her cup. He reached over for the cup nearest B'vin. "No reason for you to hurt yourself."

Dyaera took a sip and watched as D'cal fetched the cup for B'vin. "Were you playing chess?" "Well, _I_ was playing. B'vin was losing." He gave his new greenrider friend a teasing grin as he filled his cup.

"Again, lets try _you_ on the drugs and see how many games you win then!" B'vin teased back after he had taken a long sip. He gave the cup back to D'cal and laid back against his pillow. He would never admit it, but even the easy tasks like playing chess with D'cal tired him. He was almost glad when he had to leave, then he was able to sleep easier and his days seems to pass by quicker. Dyaera made an amused noise, trying to stifle a laugh. She'd learned early on that laughing was very, very painful. "I think I play better when I'm drugged."

"Well, I have to agree with you there," D'cal laughed. "I'm not sure chess is really your game, Dyaera."

"You just say that because I always win," she retorted, wrinkling her nose at him.

"Hmph," B'vin snorted, annoyed at their playful interchange, "I think you probably win for reasons other than your skill... or maybe because of it!" The look on D'cal's face was enough to chastise the green rider. Sinking lower into his bed, B'vin tried to angle his body away from them. "D'cal do you think you could fetch one of the healers for me? I think some of that nasty fellis juice might be in order."

"Of course." He walked off to find the healer, relieved that it was, at least in his own mind, the pain that had been talking, and not any animosity between the two that he did not know about.

While he was gone Dyaera glanced over at B'vin. "Don't be nasty. D'cal's just trying to be nice."

"Dyaera, stay out of it." he sighed, not bothering to turn back towards her. "Don't worry, I'll be knocked out in a few minutes and you can have your boyfriend all to yourself again."

Dyaera snorted, lowering her voice so that D'cal wouldn't hear her if he was on his way back. "You've probably got a better chance with him than I do. He doesn't think much of the idea of sleeping with me. Maybe if you stop being such a brat you could get lucky."

If it wouldn't have hurt so much he would have thrown something at her he was so furious at her statement. "D'cal and I are just friends." he hissed, "I don't want to sleep with him, and besides, he's completely besotted with you! You're all he ever talks about and he's forever hovering around your bed. He might not want to sleep with you, but it's not because he doesn't care." And just to get her to shut up he added, "I have a feeling that with all the bed hopping I hear about you doing and the fact that D'cal is actually a decent caring person, that you're the cause of D'cal not wanting to sleep with you. I'm surprised he even cares to _talk_ to you anymore!"

Dyaera glared at him, not wanting to think about how little bed hopping she was going to be doing in the future. "Well, at least people will sleep with me," she retorted under her breath as D'cal returned. D'cal laid a reassuring hand on the young man's shoulder. "Don't worry, B'vin. The healers are getting something for you and will be here soon."

"Thanks D'cal, I appreciate it." His voice was calm, but inside B'vin was furious. Dyaera didn't know anything about him. He didn't want to sleep with D'cal, he didn't want to sleep with anyone! He just wanted to be left alone. "Are you all right, B'vin?" D'cal was concerned by his stern face, attributing it more to pain than anything that might have transpired between the two of them.

"Hmm, yeah, just tired." he replied, not looking over towards Dyaera who he wished was in another wing of the infirmary if not a whole other Weyr!
