B'ram

B'ram

"I'm sorry about almost running you down in that last drill, K'nure. I feel like such a sharding idiot," B'ram said as he pulled off his riding helmet with a bit of disgust. "I guess I dipped when I should have climbed. I feel like a sharding weyrling again trying to learn all these drills."

The bluerider shrugged and pulled off his gloves. "No worries. It takes time." **Just hopefully not so much time that you do that during Threadfall...** "And we've got a good Wingleader - even if he does get us up at dawn for drills!"

"Yes, well, I had heard his reputation," B'ram said with a grin as he followed suit. "Shards its warm here!"

"You'll get used to that, too. It can be deceptive when we're in the air. But it's sharding nice to be able to lounge on a beach or sit outside for lunch when places like Dragonsfall are shivering and under two feet of snow! Have you had much of a chance to look aroud, yet?"

B'ram shook his head. "No, not yet. I'm still getting lost on my way to the dinning hall half the time."

"That too will pass," K'nure said grandly as he stooped to pick up Rasakith's riding straps. The blue had headed straight for the beach so that he could loll on the hot sand. "When I first got here I could barely find my way across the Weyrbowl."

"Wait, the Weyrbowl... That's where we are now, right?" the brownrider asked with a teasing grin. "When did you come here?"

"I Impressed here. I haven't flown anywhere else, and I'm not sure that I'd want to." He started down the path toward the beach to join his dragon, intending to make a small detour to one of the gazebos set up in case of rain to leave his stuff. "Why'd you transfer?"

Too get away from a woman just sounded so cliche... Besides, it was time for a change! "Girifith and I just wanted to try our wings in a new place. The Dolphin Cove call for riders seemed the perfect opportunity."

K'nure suffered a brief pang of grief at the mention of their losses, but managed to stuff if down. It was hard to see the Wings so altered... and so quickly. "Opportunity... there's lots of that, depending on what you're looking for, of course. But now the question is - are you looking for an opportunity to swim, or sunbathe?" The bluerider grinned. "If you consult your handy map, you'll find that you're on the path to the beach."

B'ram grinned. "Well, bluerider, which would you recommend? Watching the ladies from the sand or from the waves? Or should start on the sand and follow one in?"

K'nure decided that he liked the man already. "I guess that depends on whether or not you have the _opportunity_ to follow - if you do, as the older and wiser dragonrider, I'd recomend seizing the, ah, opportunity. How old are you, anyway?"

"Twenty-seven."

"More experienced and wiser, then," K'nure grinned. "Yeah, I'm older than I look, unfortunately."

The bluerider tapped his finger alongside his nose. "I'll never tell.
How long ago did you Impress?"

B'ram didn't even have to hesitate. "Nine wonderful turns ago."

"Weyrbrat?"

"Oh yes. Born and raised at Far Island Weyr. I stood at every hatching once I came of age and never took a craft or thought of any other way of life."

The bluerider nodded in satisfaction. "Thought so. You have the look
- either you're a weyrbrat, or you're thoroughly 'Weyr'. You can spot the riders who're hanging onto Hold life _miles_ away."

B'ram laughed. "Tell me about it. I really just don't understand what is so hard about living in the Weyr? I think living in the Hold would torture!"

"So do I! At least _your_ dragon is of the appropriate colour!"
K'nure rolled his eyes. "It was hard enough apprenticing. And to be expected to marry and have children at this young age? I'd much prefer to... sample each and every opportunity as it comes along. You never know what you'll regret missing out on."

"I never could get that. What does it matter who someone _else_ loves. It has no effect on who _you_ love. It's not like a contagious disease or anything."

"Some people are far too scared for their own goods," K'nure said, sounding slightly bitter. "Scared of each other, scared of love, scared of _not_ loving... it's a wonder that they don't all keel over of unhappiness, but I guess they're too busy worrying about what the neighbours will say."

The brownrider shook his head sadly. "That's no way to live. Bring them all to the Weyrs, I say. Let them see what real freedom tastes like."

"They'd probably spent the rest of their lives hiding under their beds. And they'd miss out on all of _this_!" As they were speaking they'd climbed over a small rise and the beach lay spread out before them. Dragons and riders lounged on the hot sand or splashed in the water that sparked in the sunlight. K'nure spread his arms wide.
"Opportunity is knocking, my friend! You wanted ladies, and I've brought you to a beach full of scantilly-clad beauties. You won't find a finer sight at any other Weyr." He winked. "And now you know why I won't transfer."

"Yes," B'ram grinned as he looked over the scene. "I think I've come home."
