Late Night Projects and Bronze Nursemaids

Writers: Rochelle
Date Posted: 31st May 2008

Characters: R'syl
Description: R'syl looses an argument with his tired dragon.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 10, day 12 of Turn 4

The pounding in his head was becoming unbearable again. Wearily, R'syl rubbed his temples, wishing that the gesture would do more for his headache than just give his hands something mindless to do. He blinked, and then squinted at the hides in front of him. They blurred for a second, and he closed his eyes again. It was late. He'd been working on the sharding reports since classes had been dismissed, with only a few breaks for minor emergencies with the weyrlings. He was tired. That was probably causing his vision to blur -that or the three pots of klah he'd gone through. He wasn't sure. But he had to get the reports done. He was so close now. The new clutch would be hatching soon, and he'd have a whole new batch of weyrlings to juggle in a few days. A whole new thirty-five weyrlings to stress and over and to add to his endless hidework.

He sighed. **And no one ever wonders why so many Weyrlingmasters are not weyrmated -there's no time for anything else.**

He reached for the mug beside him, and frowned at it when he saw it was empty. He grabbed the pot of klah, wincing to himself at how cold it was, and dumped the dregs into the mug. He swirled the muddy liquid, staring into the depths as if he could find the answers to everything there.

}:Go to sleep.:{ Usaeth echoed suddenly in his brain, sounding tired and mildly annoyed. }:You need rest.:{ R'syl paused before draining the last of the klah. **I thought you were asleep.**

He could hear the dragon's snort in the other room. }:You need rest. You can finish them tomorrow. Go to sleep.:{ The bronze insisted.

He grimaced. Usaeth avoiding the question was an answer of it's own. **Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you. I'll go to sleep as soon as I'm done, I promise.**

}:No you won't.:{ Usaeth said testily, his voice echoing in R'syl's enervated mind and causing him to wince. He could hear the dragon moving restlessly in his bed, and turned to look through the door from the little office in his weyr through to where he could see a glimpse of bronze in the shadows, and a great eye slowly peeling back the thick outer eyelid. }:You will work all night, and fall asleep where you are until morning. You need rest. Go to sleep.:{ He groaned. "I'm almost done, Usaeth." He said testily. "I already promised to go to bed as soon as I finish. It won't be long."

He was having enough problems finishing his hidework without Usaeth getting testy at him. He really didn't need this, not when he was so close to done. It was one of the few disadvantages of having a dragon inextricably intertwined with his mind. Sometimes the bronze was as bad as a nursemaid.

}:No.:{ Usaeth said shortly, peeling another eyelid back so that R'syl could see the faint glow of swirling irritated colors in the dark. }:You need sleep Now. You can finish tomorrow.:{ "Usaeth..."

}:Now.:{ The bronze insisted, the last eyelid peeling back to allow the multifaceted orb to see him clearly. }:Or I will call Dwarkanath's.:{ R'syl paused in the act of turning back to his desk, staring at the eye in the dark. "You wouldn't." Not even Usaeth would call his 'second at this hour of the night, not when he _knew_ the man had just gotten off a shift...

}:Now.:{ Usaeth insisted shortly, his head lifting from the floor just enough for R'syl to see the eye lift in the dark.

"Fine." He grumbled, capitulating with bad grace, lurching out of the chair and glowering at the bronze. "But I'm getting up early to finish it all. These cannot afford to wait."

There was another snort from Usaeth's weyr, but the bronze said nothing further as his rider stumbled to his bed.
