A Growing Family

Writers: AL, Kaysea

Characters: Irlani, Gyta
Description: Irlani asks Gyta what she thinks about having Ravyan around on a permanent basis.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 11, day 8 of Turn 4

Aileyan's schedule was different enough that Gyta was able to go with Irlani to drop him off at his mother's and return to J'gen's weyr with time to spare. This was a good thing, for Irlani wanted to have the chance to discuss the day with her foster daughter. She thought everything had gone well. Ravyan was a happy child, though he did act in typical toddler ways.
He'd thrown a couple of fits and had gotten rather cranky just before his nap time. Nothing abnormal, and certainly better behaved than some other toddlers she'd cared for, though it may have simply been because he was in a new situation. Still, he had given Gyta a chance to a decent spectrum of how a younger child could be.

When they reached the weyr, Irlani pulled Gyta over to a chair then sat down beside her. "So. Do you like Ravyan?"

Gyta sat and considered Irlani's question for a long time. The little boy had been alright for some of the day, but he had also been a pain. Had she ever created such a fuss when she didn't get her own way? She didn't think so, she didn't think her mother would have let her get away with such behaviour. When he had woken from his nap he had been fun to play with -
happy and playful, but when he was tired....

"I've been asked to be his foster mother," Irlani watched the child carefully for even the smallest nuance of expression, "but I want to know your feelings on the matter. Would it be all right to have Ravyan as a foster brother?"

Slowly she nodded. Irlani was good to her, she had loved having her around, maybe Irlani could get him to behave better? Maybe she, Gyta, could help him behave better and be less cranky when he didn't get his own way. She gave Irlani a smile, yes, he would be fun to have around, maybe.

"Well, I'm glad to hear it. But remember, Gyta, by saying yes you've made a promise." Irlani held up a finger as if to warn the child of the gravity of her agreement. "You can't go back on it once you've made it."

She considered this warning briefly. But having him around would really be like having a little brother around, something she had hoped to have with her mother and father - it would give her a taste of what she had missed with her older siblings. She nodded once more, and took Irlani's hand, "Promise." she gave a croaky whisper - her voice not used to being used.

Irlani cupped the child's cheek and leaned forward to place a kiss upon her forehead. "Our family is growing, little one. He's going to look to you, so you be sure to help him learn and be a good example, okay?"

Gyta nodded eagerly a wide smile splitting her face. She mouthed, Promise, again and hugged Irlani tightly. She was right, this little family they had was growing.
