The child on the brownrider's arms whimpered a bit as they came into the infirmary. "Shh, Deralie, we'll get the healer to look at you and they'll make it all better." She sniffed a little and buried her head against his shoulder.
"K'deren?" Anji had glanced up at the man's entrance, but her eyes snapped back after the first quick glance, when she realsied who it was before her. "What's wrong? And....who is this?" she asked, her brow rising a little in question.
He smiled in recognition of the healer. "This is my daughter Deralie," he said. "She fell over on the beach and banged her arm, she said it hurts."
"Let's take a look shall we?" she asked, her voice softening as she came around the edge of the counter, and indicated he should follow into the room in front of her. "Come in, and just lay her gently on the table." she said to K'deren. This was a side she would be interested to see in him: the softer, more protective side, as opposed to the in control wingleader in him.
Gently K'deren sat Deralie down on the table. "It's going to be okay now, you need to lie down and let the nice healer see your arm. She'll help it stop hurting."
"Da," she whimpered. "I know it hurts, but I'm going to stay right here and hold your other hand," he reassured her.
"It's okay Deralie, I'll try not to hurt you I promise, I just need to have a look at your arm, and feel it a little. You let me know if I hurt you at all and I'll stop straight away." Anji tried to reassure the child, speaking softly, with what she hoped was warmth. The way the child was holding her arm, made it hard to determine, so she slowly reached out and with warm hands, felt gently along the length of the arm, concentrating on what she was feeling, but her eyes fastened on the child's face for any sign of discomfort.
"Be brave," K'deren held his daughter's hand, one eye watching as Aniji worked. "Anji isn't going to hurt you, she's going to make it stop hurting, right?"
"Right." she smiled in answer, her hand travelling the length of the child's arm. "Am I hurting you at all?" she asked, unable to feel any break, but there was an obvious swelling in the arm where a bruise was forming.
The almost three turn old child shook her head. "No," she said after glancing at her Dad. "Not hurting."
"Good." Anji nodded, then looked up at K'deren. "There's nothing broken, but she'll be sore for a day or so. And the bruising is just beginning, so expect it to turn a few nice shades over the next sevenday." She looked back at Deralie, "I have something here I think you'll like." she turned and walked over the the supply cupboard and extracted a small jar. Inside were sweetmeats from the kitchens, a selection of various sweets that the healers liked to keep a supply of for when dealing with children.
"Ohhh Da!" Deralie's eyes looked to the jar with longing. "Can I?"
"If the healer says so..."
"While you're choosing which one you'd like I need to put some numbweed on your arm, to take the owies away, is that all right with you Deralie?" Anji asked, moving back towards the child with the jar in full view. A distraction would help while she manipulated the child's arm, and the sweetmeats would make an ideal distraction, more so than K'deren attempting to keep the child occupied.
"Just one, " cautioned K'deren as he watched his daughter then switched his attention to the healer as she continued her work. "Is there anything specific I need to tell her fostermother?"
"Just try and keep her quiet for the next day or so." she advised. "I don't think she will want to move around too much, a small bump will hurt her enough to caution her again if she does become too active."
"You hear that? You'll need to be careful for a few days. Maybe you can help your fostermother with the babies."
"That's perfect!" Anji smiled, "And lots of fun helping with babies now you're such a big girl." She had finished the numbweed, relieved the sweet had taken the child's attention for a little while. "If you have any problems with her, you should bring her back down for a check up - but she should be all right now. If the arm begins to ache again, just apply a little more numbweed."
K'deren nodded as he lifted Deralie down. "Say thank you for the sweetie," he said.
"Thank you," said the little girl.
"You're very welcome. Just remember to take care from now on, and try not to bump your arm again, okay?" Anji answered, crouching down to stay on the little girls level. She looked back up at K'deren, "Any problems, don't hesitate to call back, okay?" her eyes held his briefly.
He smiled at her, "Lets hope she doesn't have any problems with this."
"For anything.." she replied, before turning away and busying herself at the counter.
