For once it was not the infirmary where K'deren spotted the healer. It was in the Weyrbowl, where he was just finishing taking the straps off Donneth. He smiled as he watched her walk past, wondering if she'd actually notice him.
She had noticed the rider landing, and knew, even from a distance, who he was. She watched as he landed, and slid easily down from his dragons shoulder. His litheness was a trait shared by most of the other riders in the Weyr, but on his body... it sat well. As she neared him, she tried to act nonchalant but her eyes kept being drawn to him.
"Anji" called out K'deren finally. "How've you been?"
"K'deren, fine, and you?" she asked, turning purposefully toward him. "You haven't visited me lately - which could only be a good thing." she said with a wide smile on her face.
"Well my fingers are fine, and Deralie has been careful not to fall over again," said K'deren with a smile in return. "In fact we all seem to be healthy right now. Especially if I stay away from felines."
"Well that's good to hear, that you're all doing well. I take it you've had no more run-ins with the feline since? Did you end up getting one for Deralie?"
"One that's not a kitten, and knows not to bite!" He grinned, "And no known wild feline ancestry."
"Ahh, playing it safe - you hope." she laughed softly. "Do you always play it safe?" the words were out of her mouth before she was conscious of thinking them.
"That depends on just what it is that's being played with," he replied after a moment.
"Oh?" for once, she was lost for words as the colour crept up over her face. "I er... I was hoping for just a simple answer." she said, grasping for something that wouldn't be provocative. "Do you have a partner, K'deren?" she wasn't as familiar with the personal side of the riders in the Weyr as she was with their common injuries.
"Besides Donneth here you mean?"
She rolled her eyes exaggeratedly, "Yes, _besides_ Donneth. Are you purposefully being perverse?"
K'deren considered her words for a moment, he wasn't trying to be anything. "My weyrmate died in fall some time ago."
"Oh..." Anji felt as if he had pricked her with a needlethorn. "I am _so_ sorry. I didn't mean any offense, K'deren, honestly."
"None taken," K'deren said softly. "She gave me a wonderful daughter and a few very happy turns."
"And no one since?" she asked, her voice was softer and lower this time. "I'm not very good at this..."
"Nobody apart from flights," he admitted.
"I wanted to ask you..." she paused, girding herself for a negative response, but still hoping for a positive one, "...if you'd care to join me for a drink later tonight? I'd ask you for dinner, but figure you'd be otherwise engaged - with the children."
"I'd like that," he said. "I need to see Deralie at her fostermother's later, and the boys as well. but after that..."
"You would? Great!" she smiled, pleased that her boldness was rewarded. "Then we'll meet in the dining cavern?"
"Later this evening," he assured her.
"Okay, I'll...see you later then. Bye!" she lifted a hand in farewell, smiling brightly and quite pleased with herself.
