Cinale

Cinale

Catriana was is bright spirits that morning, humming a little melody her father used to sing when he tended the vines out in the yards. She'd been at the Hall for little over a sevenday and things seemed to be going alright. She'd started to adjust, started to make some friends.

She was just tying her apron around her waist and shoving stray curls back under the bright blue scarf she wore over her hair as she made her way down the steps to the kitchens. It was early, and the pre-dawn Hall was peaceful and quiet, before the majority of the residents arose and wandered into the dining room for breakfast.

Catriana was certainly a morning person, but a cup of klah before she had to start working was a welcome thing, so she'd developed the habit of rising earlier than she needed to for just that reason.

She was not the first to rise early that morning. As she came into the kitchen she found Daigoro sitting with his mug of klah and a plate full of fried tubars and eggs. "Where is my toast, woman?"

"Will you be _patient_, Daigoro?" Cinale asked, her tone feigning irritation she didn't really feel as she glanced at him over her shoulder. "If you're so impatient, you can grab it off the baking sheet yourself."

"Oh, Cat," Daigoro smiled as the young woman walked through the door.
"Be a dear, will you, and hand me one of those pieces of toast?"

Cinale rolled her eyes. "So much for that," she muttered, then she smiled at the young woman. "Good morning, hon."

"Good morning!" Cat grinned and went over to fetch the toast. "And how is everyone this fine morning?" She got him two pieces, just in case.

"Much better now that I have toast," Daigoro replied with a wink.
"Thank you, Catriana."

"You're most welcome, Sir." She smiled and curtsied. Then she moved over to Cinale to lend a hand. Her voice dropped to a quiet whisper, "He's up early terrorizing the kitchens. I do wonder why." She winked at the Cook and reached for a towel to dry some of the dishes.

Cinale stared at the girl for a moment, not sure whether she wanted to grin like an adolescent, or smile, or bustle Catriana over to the bread-dough which needed packing. She decided to do the latter. "If you'd start slapping around the rest of that, that would be wonderful, hon."

"Yes, ma'am!" Catriana did as she was told and began to work at the dough, glancing over at Daigoro, then back to Cinale.

Giving the girl a gentle pat on her shoulder, Cinale glanced over at Daigoro. "How's your toast?" the cook asked as she went over to him, a kettle of steaming klah in hand. She raised it up. "Want a refill?"

"Oh, well, since it's in hand," Daigoro grinned as he offered his mug to be refilled. "And I don't suppose you have any more for those fried tubers? Those are real nice."

"Yes, and I'll get you some as long as you promise to stop nagging me about _toast_. You have a habit of doing that, you know," she grinned, looking down at him with a raised eyebrow as she filled his mug.

The Hallsecond rolled his eyes and turned to the young woman. "Do you hear this woman, Catriana? Don't listen to anything she says about me.
I _never_ nag."

"Oh, you'd better listen to me, Catriana," Cinale warned, her tone anything but serious. "He does nag. But then again, everyone nags at me, right, Daigoro? It comes with my job."

"Lies, Catriana. It's all lies. She has us all wrapped around her little finger with her tasty treats laced with evil charms designed to ensnare us." He leaned over conspiritorially. "Stay away from the cookies.
Those are especially dangerous."

"Yes, Ma'am. Yes, Sir. I'm not to listen to either of you, and I'll not eat the cookies." It was really hard not to laugh. Really.
