"Cosani!" Her name was uttered with great enthusiasm and Meledei fairly attacked Cosani and gave her a hug. She was ecstatic, unable to quite believe that she had impressed, finally impressed, yet unable to deny it. She was whole, the part that was missing that she never realised missing finally found. "You impressed! Congratulations!"
This was a rather hug filled day. Cosani briefly returned the embrace. "I heard you got the gold." She felt a sting of jealousy. Meledei would get all the attention now, all the praise. But then again ... maybe Cosani was glad she wouldn't get that kind of attention. And no dragon could be more perfect than Shalith.
"Yes, isn't she wonderful? Oh, and your lifemate is so beautiful?" Meledei let her hands slide down to clasp Cosani's and let them rock back and forth. "What's her name?"
"Shalith." Just saying it brought a smile to her lips.
"Beautiful." She meant it too. Not has beautiful as Elleth, but then, Meledei knew she was quite biased. "I'm so happy for you!" She was happy for everyone. The girl felt like she was fair to burst with the joy that filled her.
"I'm happy for you, too," Cosani said, although she was still a little jealous. "What's her name? I left before you Impressed."
"Elleth." Such a beautiful name. Such a beautiful creature! "And we get to go through weyrling training together! It's so exciting!"
Cosani remembered the dragon carving Meledei had given her and she smiled. "Yes." It would be nice to go through Weyrling training with someone she actually liked. "Maybe we'll be next to each other in the barracks."
"Are we assigned or do we get to pick?" If they got to pick, Meledei was going to try to make sure was next to both Cosani and Sorsha.
"I don't know." It would be awful to get stuck next to someone she hated.
"Well, we'll see. If no, I guess I'll asked." Meledei really hoped they could choose. "Are you hungry? I'm hungry. I think Elleth's rubbed off on me!"
"I'm hungry and full at the same time," Cosani said. "The full part must be Shalith. I can't believe how much they eat."
"I'm still trying to figure out where they put it all!" Meledei laughed, then motioned to the table laden with food. "Come on, let's do something about _our_ bellies."
Cosani took a plate and started to fill it. "Did you see Eddron got a blue? And everyone was so sure he'd get bronze!"
"I must say, it came as quite a surprise to me!" Meledei admitted with a giggle. Eddron had been quite popular with the ladies. She wondered if some of them would look at him the same way now. "Oh, and that fellow who wandered onto the sands. That was...unexpected."
"I heard some people talking about that. What happened? I missed that, too." She'd been so focused on the gold egg, and then on her new lifemate.
"A harper wandered onto the sands and a blue chose him. He wasn't even supposed to be there. I don't know why he did, but I guess it's a good thing." Otherwise, it was possible the dragon might not have found him. He may not have officially been a candidate but if that's who was supposed to be the blue's lifemate, so be it.
"Huh. That's interesting. I kind of wish I'd paid a little more attention."
"Well, I don't think I would have noticed either if I had impressed before that happened." Meledei admitted with a half grin. "But it was certainly a surprise for everyone! For the boy most of all!"
"I guess the dragons really do know. Last time I wanted it so bad and got nothing, and he just walks in and there his dragon is." Cosani added a last spoonful to her plate.
"But you impressed this time." Meledei reminded her gently and nudged her friend. She grinned broadly. "I've been standing since I was old enough - five turns. I was beginning to think I would never impress!"
"And then you ended up with a gold," she said with a little smile. She was thinking of Shalith, though, and how the little green had been well worth waiting for. "Let's see if we can find a table."
Meledei turned away from Cosani to look around for a couple of empty spots right together. She spotted some and motioned for Cosani to follow her.
Yes, she ended up with a gold. It was still a strange though. A strange and wonderful thought. Meledei still wondered if she was going to wake up and find it all a dream. If it was a dream, though, she hope she never awoke.
