"Toriat? Is it true?" Teseada had heard something about a shouting match in the dining caverns. It seemed like it had happened after she had left.
Onnyth had wanted her, so she'd passed on the idea of dessert to go see what it was.
A garbled version of events had got to her, thanks to having overheard a couple of drudges talking.
"What, is What true?!?" Toriat replied quite annoyed. He was just trying to get away, he didn't want to talk to anyone, except, someone he could talk to. He was stalking around, figuring out who that could be. He finally stopped and spun around to see who had spoken.
Teseada, he had just yelled at Teseada. "Oh, shellcrack Teseada, I'm sorry, I'm just, not in a good mood right now." He slapped his hand to his forehead, **she must have heard something** he thought. "So, what exactly did you hear?" He swore he hadn't seen her in the dinning caverns. **It must be spreading, I'm being gossiped about.
How can I live this down?**
"Something about your sister shouting at you?" she said. "And Birigundi?" It was probably nothing, after all far worse things happened in the dining caverns, and would continue to happen.
"I was just, concerned!" Toriat responded quite defensively. "We're hold bred, men here, are different." He paused his voice going quiet.
"I just don't want to see my sister hurt." He sighed. "And then, And Then!? She starts shouting, at me!"
"Toriat," she began, "It is different, especially now." Bring weyrbred, she thought she knew what he was getting at, but wasn't sure how to explain it.
"She has to think of her dragon. I know that sounds hard, but her green _will_ rise. She's probably trying to deal with that too, it's not easy, not even for me and I grew up here." She reached out a hand to his shoulder, "There is no waiting for the one and only here, it doesn't happen, especially not now in a pass. I mean fighting thread is dangerous, look what happened to Wingleader U'kaiah."
"I'm still going to be concerned!" Toriat responded sulkily. "I know there won't be any 'one and only', but can't she stay away from the guys that simply have a little check list with Every Female On IT?!"
Toriat barely paused, not allowing Teseada a chance to speak. "And Viyanth, is still quite a while from rising... and, joining the wings." Toriat began to get upset. "Why did she impress! My little sister? Wasn't coming to the Weyr enough? I don't want to see her hurt. And I can't do anything, I'm stuck on the ground." His head hung, somewhat in shame.
"Is that what this is about?" she asked softly. "That you didn't impress?"
"No, trust me, no, I'm fine, that was over a month ago," he said, shoulders hunched. "I'm just so concerned for her, and then she has to fire back, yelling at me. Why couldn't she say 'Toriat, thats none of your business' rather then dredging up her, not necessarily correct views of My PERsonal LIFE." Toriat obviously saw only himself the victim here, not understanding Aryn's need to turn to defensive to fend off her brothers judgement of her _own_ personal life.
This was where being an only child left her at a distinct disadvantage.
Understanding sibling rivalry... it might as well be an impossibility to her. "Maybe you should try to talk to her, to explain how you feel?" she suggested.
Toriat gestured emphatically towards the dinning caverns. "I... just Tried...that! Sorry, I don't think she'll see me for a while, and I don't much care to see her."
Somehow Teseada got the feeling that she was only making things worse.
"Erm... Do you want me to talk to her? See if she'd talk to you?"
"No!" That was the last thing Toriat wanted. His sister, Teseada, talking about, him. **That could only end in trouble** he thought.
His arms flailed in an attempt to display his anger. "Do not talk to my sister, and so help me by the egg of Faranth if you do not stop talking about her I am going to walk away, right now!"
This was not the help he needed right now. He needed other help.
Help she couldn't give him. With all those accusations back there...
he just wanted to _hold_ her, and he couldn't. He braced himself, ready to storm away depending on her response.
"Fine!!!" She retorted, about to walk away herself and leave him to wallow in it. "I'm only trying to help."
"Shardling Women!" he muttered as he turned to leave. Then stopped, still facing away from her. "I want help, but opening communication paths with Aryn, is not the help I need."
"Help?" Teseada was confused. She chased after Toriat, putting a hand on his shoulder again. "What sort of help?"
**I have to get away** Toriat thought, the touch on his shoulder, his mind tried to will away the comfort of that contact. He turned, facing her. His breath was ragged in his maelstrom of emotions as he grasped one of her hands. He wasn't sure what to say though, but finally words formed on his lips. "I'm sorry," and with that he turned for the last time and began running down the corridor, away.
"Toriat?" she called, watching him walk away. Whatever it was that was bothering him, it clearly wasn't something he wanted to talk about now.
