Feeling a weight settle itself behind her, Ailyn stirred, sleepily reaching for the arm that curled around her waist. "Firon? You're back late, my love..." she murmured softly, a small smile whispering across her lips as she felt his mouth press against the back of neck through her hair.
"Mm-hmmm," he agreed as he buried his nose in her hair, breathing deeply of the familiar scent that was only his wife. The journeyman curled his other arm under the pillow her head was resting on and wrapped her completely in his arms. "Shards but it's good to be home."
"Mmm... Long day, no?"
He nodded as he nuzzled her neck below her ear. "Yes, too long. Master Covol is going to drive me to crack my shell before long, I think."
"Master Covol is so involved in his work that he chooses to ignore that others have lives outside of the craft." Her voice held a hint of scorn. "Life isn't _all_ about work...."
"Thank Faranth for that," he sighed. "Of course, Covol never had a woman like you to come home to. If he had he would know just how painfully unimportant making sure ever bottle has been turned the proper degree in the Lord Holder's cellar can be."
"All unmarried men must be miserable," she muttered before turning in his arms to look at him. She affectionately trailed her nails through his hair, then lightly down his cheek to his chin where already there was a days worth of stubble.
He leaned into her caress, his eyes looking at every familiar detail of her beautiful, loving face. "Getting my Master's knots _has_ to be easier than this. I'm sure of it. In fact... Well, I've been toying with an idea..."
"Yes...?" she prompted as her hand came to rest on his arm.
He gently smoothed back an errant hair from her cheek. "I'm thinking of going over to the Hall and asking Master Fielton if I can train under another Master. Covol is..." A slight frown crossed his face. "I'm grateful to Master Covol, and I really am fond of him, as much as he drives me crazy. But... I have so many ideas, and he is so hide-bound..." He sighed his exhasperation. "I don't know. I don't want to hurt the old man, and I know once I _get_ my knots I can do as I please.
But... What do you think?"
She was silent for a moment as she thought. "Well..." she began slowly, "you've been training under him for so long... I really do think that if you'd have been training under another master, you'd have gotten your masters knots long before now." She smiled as she brushed her finger against his cheek. "You've always been ambitious, love. I think working under another master who recognizes that would be better...for you. You'd be able to do so much more than is allowed to you now... Who knows when Covol'll let you off the hook?"
"I know. It wouldn't even be a _question_ if it were any other master. It's just..." He shrugged a shoulder in frustration. "It's just that he has no one else. He's alone. And I don't want to break the old man's heart."
"You have a good heart, Firon...and those with good hearts always have to make difficut decisions, it seems." She sighed, wondering. "You could always give it another Turn..."
Firon gently touched his fingers to her lips to silence her. As her words faded into his figer tips they brushed across them caressingly. He looked deeply into her eyes as a slight smiled pulled at the corner of his lips.
"Ailyn, did I forget today to tell you just how in love with you I am?"
"Actually, you did," she grinned, lightly kissing his fingers as they slid across her lips.
"Yes, but that was candlemarks ago, and I am even more in love with you now than I was then," he whispered as his fingers slid down her neck and into her hair.
"Mmm...are you?" She tipped her head into his touch, lightly threading her fingers into his hair, gently bringing his face closer to hers. Lovingly, she swept her lashes across his brow.
"Shards woman, but you're good to come home to," he breathed as he pulled her in for an impassioned kiss.
"And you, my love," she breathed back when their lips parted briefly, "are _wonderful_ to wake up to..."
His fingers reached for the ties to her nightgown as the other hand pulled her closer. Firon had every intention of making sure that neither of them would have time for sleep the rest of the night.
