Description: N'vanik deals with a troublemaker in his wing.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 9 of Turn 5
Gheleth was admiring the sleek lines of a certain green he'd been interested in for some time, cruising along lazily and minding his own business until he turned his head straight into a huge clump of ribbons. Turning to shake them off, he caught a bad air current with his wingtip and practically flipped right over, falling out of the sky like a stone for a few meters before G'van finally got it together enough to send them both /between/ high enough for his clumsy brown dragon to right himself and avoid serious injury.
}:The Weyrleader wants you to land right now.:{ A hint of anger carried through Loseth's voice.
}: Loseth wants us to land, but I'm doing fine now, :{ relayed Gheleth.
**Just another lap and we'll be right down,** G'van reassured him.
**Got to show the girls we're not scared of a little spill, right?**
}: Another lap and we'll be right down, :{ Gheleth sent on obediently, settling into a long, slow glide that would take him past one of his and G'van's favourite girls. They did breed them pretty in Dolphin Cove, both rider and dragon had to admit, and the everyday lack of clothing on the human side sure helped too.
}:_Right now_!:{ Loseth bugled.
The urgency of Loseth's tone finally got through to Gheleth, and the brown dragon cut short his lap somewhat, circling down gently for a perfect landing just a little closer to the bronze dragon than the situation demanded.
}: Looks like the show's over for now, :{ he apologised to his rider as he hit the ground and folded his wings away neatly.
**Happens,** replied G'van casually. **Let's see if this bronzeboy's magically learned something about leadership by screwing a goldrider, then.**
"What was that?!" N'vanik yelled, sorely tempted to punch the brownrider for that I'll-answer-when-I-feel-like-it attitude. "You wanna get yourself killed?!" Behind him, Loseth's claws shifted in the sandy earth and his eyes whirled an angry orange.
With deliberate and exaggerated care and attention, G'van released each riding strap in turn, checking it over before returning it to its proper place in the harness. When he had strung out this process as long as was possible without overtly stalling, he hopped gracefully down from the dragon and looked up slightly at N'vanik, lounging against his dragon's side.
"I'm sorry, you were saying?" he asked ingenuously, attempting to imply that he simply hadn't heard the Weyrleader while he was attending to the vital and safety-critical business of properly unsecuring and checking his riding straps.
"I was _saying_," N'vanik growled, "that you're grounded for two weeks. You'll spend your nights on watch duty, and you'll spend your days mucking out the dragon infirmary. Did you hear me this time, or do I have to repeat myself?" If he was going to act like a Weyrling, he was going to get treated like one.
"I'm sorry," replied G'van insocuantly, "I was under the impression that we were short-handed and needed every dragon in the air, not grounded over a little training incident." He sounded deeply unconcerned about the promised punishment. Getting to stay out of danger and chat up the dragonhealers wasn't something that bothered him much.
"I don't need riders in the air that are gonna get themselves and others killed." This rider was worse than useless. He was a liability.
"I've never had a serious accident in Fall," claimed G'van carelessly, "but if you don't want me up there putting myself in harm's way for you, I guess you can enjoy your extra casulties from not running a full wing, and I'll shovel their shit if they survive long enough to require my services."
N'vanik grabbed G'van's jacket and shook him. "I _will not_ have you put my riders at risk! You fly like a lame wherry and I'd rather have you rot on the ground than have a piece of dung like you in my Wing!"
Panic rose in G'van's eyes as the Weyrleader actually laid hands on him and he struggled to get free of the other man's grasp. "Aaaah!" he exclaimed, totally ruining his suave and unruffled act. Gheleth rumbled a deep warning but did nothing to aid his rider as of yet, not with Loseth in the background and the memory of the other dragon's anger still fresh in his mind.
"Why don't you just stand out in Threadfall and save everyone the trouble!" N'vanik flung him away, afraid that he would start beating him.
G'van stumbled back against his dragon and took a moment to regain his composure, straightening out his riding leathers and concocting a good hurt-and-betrayed look, rubbing where N'vanik had shoved him for good measure, as if he had been subject to an unpardonable assault. "And to think I transferred from my home for this Weyr," he muttered in a stage-whisper for the benefit of the onlookers.
"You were _sent_ here because you're _worthless_!" N'vanik shouted. "Get out of my sight!" The rest of the Wing had landed, and there were several other people in the area. They were all staring. **Let them stare!** N'vanik thought, his fists clenched at his sides again.
G'van began to make good his retreat around a corner from the argument. "Come on, Gheleth," he said aloud for effect, in a kindly and slightly patronising tone, "it's obvious we're not wanted here. Let's go for a little stroll and let the Weyrleader calm down a bit." His dragon began to lumber after him in a somewhat resigned fashion.
N'vanik had to take a long, slow breath before he could speak. "I know everyone makes mistakes," he told the Wing. "What I need from you is effort. What he showed is a complete lack of effort or care. Let's go through the formation one more time, and then you can have the rest of the day off. The rest of you have earned it, unlike G'van."
