"Sir," said K'deren politely as the Weyrleader walked past.
"Greetings, Wingsecond." J'darin offered stiffly, then paused. "I needed to speak with you, if you have a moment."
"Of course Weyrleader." The tone was stiffly formal, as it always was between these two. Still, one could hope that it might finally ease, now that the bronzerider had what he so clearly wanted.
Its not as if J'darin actively _sought_ the Weyrleadership, especially not from T'moran. But he was glad Hasaarth had finally caught a Queen.
"I realize you may not be thrilled with my leadership, however, I intend to follow in T'moran's very fine tradtion. " He peered at K'deren for a moment. "Because of that, I wish you to stay right in your position as Wingsecond of Cyclone Wing and hold it together until I can find a Wingleader for it. If you have suggestions, please feel free to pass them to me."
"Sir?" K'deren had half expected to lose the knots that he was so proud of. Vonalie had been over the moons when he had accepted the promotion, well aware how much it meant to both him and Donneth. "Is this going to be permanent?"
J'darin nodded curtly. He still didn't _like_ him much, but brownriders _did_ belong in Wingsecond positions. Good ones, anyway. And T'moran said K'deren was very good. "Aye, K'deren. I intend it to be permanent. I just hope we can find a Wingleader for Cyclone as good as T'moran.." the bronzerider's brow creased in worry, revealing himself in a rare moment of truth, even to a rival.
That at least was a relief. If there had been any chance that the position would be taken away from him, he'd have resigned there and then and put in for a transfer. "The wings need continuity, and dealing with a new Wingleader will be more than enough for them."
"As it happens, that is one of the few things we agree about, brownrider." J'darin actually smiled briefly at him. Perhaps their enmity would end..
But no, he doubted it. He did not inspire friendships, himself, but he did hope to inspire loyalty and trust.
"I'd like your opinions any time you choose to share them, K'deren. As long you know they are just opinions - but I will listen. You have been in that Wing a long time. For now, you are leading during Fall, though I will not promote you as T'moran did."
Was that a smile, or had K'deren imagined it? It couldn't be that the great bronzerider was relaxing a little? Or was it that he was gloating a little.
But the fact remained that he was staying with his wing. The riders trusted him, and it didn't matter what knots he had on his shoulder. "I understand."
"Its not that I don't think you two are a good pair, you know, K'deren.
Hasaarth thinks a great deal of Donneth, and he is in full agreement with me on your skills. But we are different men with different attitudes. I sincerely hope we can work together to keep such large-scale tragedy from ever darkening the skies over Dolphin Cove again." And that was as far as he would go.
Now that was an outcome K'deren could truly hope for. Maybe in time, the two could put their differences aside, but for the moment, they did need to work together. "I won't let _that_ happen."
"Neither will I, Wingsecond. Neither will I." He said it quietly but with marked certainity. "Good day to you." He added, in dismissal. He knew K'deren didn't want to be in his company longer than necessary, and J'darin felt the same. But they could and _would_ work together. For the good of the Weyr.
