"What the shards happened up there? Half of the wing was thrown off
formation, I have one dead weyrlingstaff assistant and two scored
riders?" U'das asked in general from the riders gathered to his office
after the Fall.
"I wish I knew," said An'dr sadly. "She, she was trying to help us."
"Help," The other bluerider snorted. "She just barged right into the
middle of formation! Nalbath nearly scorched her!" There was shock
beneath his angry tone.
"How is Nalbath's wing, by the way?" U'das asked.
"It will heal, but we are unable to fly for two sevendays or more."
"You'd be sat here without me and Pluserth if Ava hadn't been there!"
An'dr reacted out of shock and grief, neither he or Pluserth had really
taken in the fact that Mindath and Ava were gone.
"You were not in danger, Nalbath was about take care of the clump!
That's what the wingmates are for! " Nalbath's rider disagreed.
"Cut it out!" U'das snapped.
"You're right, sorry sir. That was uncalled for," An'dr said.
U'das sighed. This thing was giving him a headache.
"Wingleader, I am so very sorry," M'galec finally chimed in. "I have no
idea how that weyrling got her hands on firestone for her lifemate. She
always had a history of insubordanence, but I would have thought she
would have been smarter than that." It was his fault really, for
assuming.
"Isn't she the same one who flew with her lifemate too early? She
seems to have a history of impatient, ill concidered actions," U'das
asked. The letters on his hide were just a blurr, so he picked up his
reading lensess and put them on.
"Yes, sir," the Weyrlingmaster Second said guiltily. "That is why we
held her back in the weyrling wing, to try to teach her discipline and
the importance of following the rules. Obviously we failed."
"Obviously, and the Thread took care of the rest," U'das said,
sounding more sad than anything. So young life lost, and why? Because
she wanted to flame Thread!
"How did she get firestone? When I was weyrlingmaster at North, the
weyrlings delivering firestone didn't chew firestone?" The question was
rhetoric one.
An'dr held his tongue. Couldn't they see that she had saved lives. Did
it matter how she'd got the firestone to give Mindath?
U'das noticed how An'dr looked. "Are you all right, An'dr? I got the
impression you two were close?" His tone was compassionate.
"She was my best friend here, and one day I might have asked her to be
my weyrmate. Mindath saved Pluserth and me."
The other bluerider was about to say something when U'das shot a
warning glance at him and he closed his mouth. It was apparent to
U'das that An'dr was grief stricked and there was no need to drag this
on.
"Thank you, An'dr, you may go now. I think I got the picture of what
happened. I'm sorry you lost a friend."
An'dr got to his feet. "Sir," he said with a nod for the Weingleader and
the Weyrlingmaster's second. "If you need us, just get hold of Pluserth."
"Of course. Take care of yourself, An'dr," U'das replied.
